    PS2 modchips

A US-based friend of mine is shopping around for a PS2 modchip. He had problems finding reliable info, so I figured I could ask you people. I'm sort of trying to get used to the idea of possibly taking one of the black monolithic monstrosities into my house as well, so I'd welcome any info too.

Any bits of information would be appreciated - anything related to cost, functionality, compatibility, reliability, places to buy etc etc. My friend seemed confused by the different versions/flavours/colours of each chip, so he'd probably like any info on that as well.

    Thanks

Best chip - Messiah 2. No contest, plays everything reliably. Supports all models from all regions.

Best modders - Will2003/Saurian - PM them or check out the website at www.londonconsole.com. Current going rate is about ?65.

    That's about it really

edit: Oh yeah and I don't know about US chip sellers but a UK source is www.baldbouncer.co.uk that's recommended by the guys on here.

Does the Messiah 2 support region free DVD? (I somehow got the idea it doesn't..)

no, but you can use the action replay with it to get region free or one of them region free discs

The DMS3 chip does DVD movie multiregion but it doesn't boot games as reliably. And it's more expensive.

Best solution is to go for a Messiah 2 with a Region X or similar as wod suggested.
