XP & Hard Drive Question/Help Please

Right I have XP, 3 users and a 30gb hard drive, the HD seems to be filling up really quickly yet I've not much installed except XP and a few other things, try to burn as much to CD as poss.

Biggest space taker is the 3 profiles in Documents & Settings (sizes like 8.8gb, 2.2gb & 1.9gb) now noob like question; is the space allocated to the three users the programs etc that have been installed when signed on as them (seems logical - even though those figures are extremely high). When I go into the profile, there is the normal favorites, desktop, cookies etc folders but when I total up these 6 or 8 folders you only total about 70mb.

Have run disk clean up and defrag in last few weeks and all OK.

Where is all my space going ? it's a laptop otherwise I would just go out and buy a massive HD, if the above is not clear please say.

if your system is running fine, clear out all your system restore points...

ull probably find its making a system checkpoint daily for each user... this can take up quite a bit of space, often a few GB's...

also make sure temp folders used in your burning programme are cleared too...

Thanks Sc8t@, I have switched system restore off - where is the folder old saves will be contained ?

I use Easy CD, guess it will have a temp folder in the program folder, will have a look tonight.

      Cheers.

erm when you turned it off it should have asked you if you wanted to delete all the previous restore points... anyway... you can clear them all by going to disk cleanup, click the more options tab, then i think its the bottom options. just click clean all but latest restore point

Right click your recycle bin and see how much space is reserved for it under properties, you might create some space by reducing that. Personally id keep system restore on, it saved me once, but you can reduce the amount of space it is set to use.

Time to recommend the best most useful tool ever - Treesize - http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/ - run this on your c drive and you will see exactly where and what is using your space. Its such a brilliant little tool.

thanks for link Marcus, will try it out tonight, recycle bin is already quite small, mind you guess it needs checking per user, will check other two later.
