I want to move my mp3+other things like my pictures and stuff files from my windows partition to my linux partition. Then once that is done i will dissolve the windows partition and only use linux. Btw out of fedora and mandrake which is easiest to get all my hardware going especially my gfx card and my spankers tft monitor.

Plus i definatly want to install the latest build of the KDE as the bundled software and desktop environemnts are beautiful.

All my hardware, old and new, worked perfectly with both distributions (DVD writer, joystick, scanner, printer etc. etc. etc.). I can't remember what version of KDE came with Mandrake. But I'm using the latest stable release on Fedora.

Edit: You can add my digital camera to that list of working hardware. I've just plugged it in for the first time since the move. Just plugged it into the USB port and it worked first time without a hitch and no driver twiddling.

Do you not have broadband? You can download them and burn the ISOs and save yourself even more money.

Its a bit hidden away on Mandrake but you can download from here: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-us/ftp.php3

And Fedora you can get here:

I'd recommend grabbing them via the torrent. I found it far faster than the FTP sites.

The last time I installed Mandrake, it seemed to format the drive with some sort of exotic file format and I was unable to read any of my windows drives (ntfs or fat32). Is there a way round this?

It should read FAT natively, you'll just need to mount the drive. To mount NTFS volumes you'll need to use something along the line of NTFS RPMs. >>> http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/ (That's the correct URL now! :P)

As I recall Mandrake ships being able to read both FAT and NTFS drives: the setup detected my NTFS partition and worked fine. Which isn't really all that helpful of me!

I forgot to mention Knoppix. It is a version of Linux that does not require installing so you can boot it straight from a CD! I am mailing from it now!!! Weee. I think I will install Mandrake when I get the chance.

May I be the first to suggest Ubuntu GNU/Linux. It is very nice. If you're installing onto its own disk then the installation is incredibly simple. The only hardware that wasn't detected by the installer was my second CPU but installing the SMP Kernel post install was also quite simple. By default you get a good selection of applications and a well thought out desktop.

I am pretty impressed with it!
