    Upgrading to BB :)

I've never had BB before, and it'd about 30 days until I get it, so I want to be ready

I need a modem, a filter, a router, and I assume I can just connect through my LAN using an RJ45 cable to get BB on my PC. I'll need an ISP, so if I'm getting my exchange upgraded at the start of Feb, need I contect them so they can connect me on that day, or do they need to do things like line checks and such like, which will need to be done following my exchange upgrade.

If I need anything else, and if you know any good sites that offer the required items cheaply, if you could tell me, that would be great

    Thanks

Pipex seem alright, slightly faster throughput than on BT (using the same equipment my end). I, along with a few people I know, use a Netgear DG834 and find it to be a rather good router tbh.

Comes with all the ****e you need, and Pipex will also throw in 3 filters for free (router also comes with one, you generally need 1 per phone socket in the house).

Pipex is ?23 a month (no sign on fee of ?58 unless you cancel it within 12 months, other ISPs don't do this, that I've seen anyway) and the router is about ?55.

I've got exactly the same setup as Stu, except that I'm using the Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router and whatever their ADSL modem is. I guess the DG834 is a combined version of those.
The router's a little troublesome at times, I have to reset it randomly, especially if I've been hammering my net connection for a long period of time. I haven't heard anything about the 834 though, so I guess it's bug free.

Edit: Just upgraded to some new firmware on the WGR614. Just thought you might be interested...

Can't say I've had that fella, just get the odd random disconnect once every 2 or 3 weeks, and it reconnects after a second or two. I think Marcus has the wireless DG834, forget it's model number.

Manged to fake all those registrations after all then ?

Like Stu said, the Pipex ?23 option will let you abuse your new internet connection without any download caps. It what I use and I heartily endorse them.

You can check out and compare all the ISP's and lots of other stuff at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/

And some people didn't have faith

I'm getting BB in Feb and going to Canada for 6 months in April, so I'll use a 3 month trial me thinks... if I can find one. But yeah, I'll be getting a live! account...

Actually, ****, I've got a chipped XB... bollocks... I'll have to get a new one...

You can use the money saved from the free trial on a new one.

Just switch the chip off and see how you get on. I've been using my one online and so far so good...

I bet that's the kiss of death tho

Got a stock HDD with EvoX installed and have an Executer 2. Dunno what revision though - got it about 18months / 2 years ago.

I'd say use your chipped machine with the chip turned off and then if you do get banned then get a new one. Never know though, it might work fine.

The main thing there banning for now is HDD not matching the eeprom that is registered with Microsoft when you first go on Live. If you don't have a stock HDD make sure you lock the HDD before going onto Live and you can't change the HDD again.

I'd recommend Pipex. My exchange got broadband enabled on Sept 1st and I preordered with Pipex. BT dicked around for about a week testing the exchange, then Pipex took 4 more days to get my line activated and then another 4 to send my free modem out to me (if you're buying your own modem/router then you won't have to wait for this) and since then it's been plain sailing. I'm also on the ?23/month Solo 500 uncapped service. Can't fault it.
