Compression software for music files - PSP

I transferred 3 tracks to my PSP, and they took up a ridiculous 19 MB space on the memory stick. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a program that will compress the files so they take up less space, or if there's any way to convert them to Sony's music storage format?

Are they 19mb on your hard drive? There's other things on the memory stick that take up space.

Yeah, they are. I'm sure I read in another thread that files can be converted to something recommended by Sony, that takes up less space, but can't seem to find the post I'm looking for....

You're thinking of ATRAC I think. I've not used it myself, it's supposed to be an OK compression system. Google for some Sony music conversion software. Don't they have an iTunes style program called Sonic Stage or something?

I've used something called razorlame which can re-encode MP3s down to a lower bitrate. I rip my albums at 320kbps which is too high (as in takes too much space) for the PSP so I just used razorlame to re-encode the MP3s at 160kbps.

you can get SonicStage from there. ATRAC also sounds better than MP3's in my view.

ATRAC's special because it cuts out the bits of the track you don't hear doesn't it, therefore retaining quality but dropping file size.

              Or something.

That's the concept of all lossy audio encoding.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm gonna give Sonic Stage/ATRAC a go.

I wouldn`t bother with ATRAC as i tried it and it ain`t supported and read on a website that support was took out at the last minute. A firmware upgrade might correct that later on though.
