    Sony DVD player region issue???

    Happy New Year all.

I hope someone can help with a quick question. I have a Sony DVP-NS705 DVD player, with PAL/NTSC playback capabilities. However, the last couple of DVD's I've imported from the US will not play on the machine. I get an error message saying something to do with region playback restrictions. I don't understand why I'm getting this message when I've got a multi-region DVD player?

    Any thoughts anyone?

    Thanks, Gard.

they might be RCE discs (region code enhanced). most multiregion mods are able to get round these now, but maybe for some reason yours can't. a way that sometimes works is to load up a region 1 DVD that you know already plays (this will then set your player to region 1 mode), then put in the disc that is refusing to play and see if it works. if that don't work then you need a better multiregion mod!

hmm it might just be the movie, Iv had a problem with 3 multiregion dvdplayers being unable to play pal gibli films, my one at home wont play them, nor will the one in my girlfriends, or the one in my girlfriends parents house, they where all multiregion, all different brands. Ended up having to watch it on the pc, where it works fine :/

Could be an RCE problem. What were the DVDs Gardy?

          cheers for the thoughts guys.

the DVD's are sports ones from the US; Faith Rewarded from Amazon.com and The World Series 2004 from CD Universe. Both are US retailers.

I thought I heard somewhere that manufacturers are increasing the region encoding on DVD's, not sure if this is accurate or not though.

            If you see this:

Then it's an RCE issue. RCE discs go that extra measure over standard region lockout and basically trick your player into revealing that it's multiregion. My oldest modded player (Tosh SD-2109) was chipped before RCE discs appeared and so hits this screen on RCE discs. There's a little workaround though, where you directly access, say, Title 01, Chapter 01, Time 00:00:00, so the very beginning of the movie, and it works. Try that on your Sony.

I'm surprised that anything modded in the last three or four years wouldn't handle RCE, though.

EDIT: Also, if you can manually set your player to Region 1 (rather than Region 0 which it's probably on now) you'll likely defeat this problem. Often it's just a remote hack.

shape, its not actually been modded (as in changed in any way from out of the box), i assumed becuase it was tagged as 'multi-region' then i wouldn't have any problems???

If it's been handset-hacked to 'all regions' RCE will detect this and stop the disc playing...

If, by multiregion, you mean it says it can play PAL/NTSC discs, it'll only play them if they're NTSC Region 0 (like some Anchor Bay discs and Criterions) or NTSC R2...

could be onto something there then. so just because it's NTSC compatible, doesn't mean it'll necessary play all US discs then?

I used it on my Sony DVP-900 takes a few attempts but works perfectly. Whats a well known RCE encoded DVD that I might have to try?

                        Gardy,

Sony doesn't make multiregion players (it owns movie houses who complain) so if it's a Sony and it's multiregion, it's been chipped by someone! Often the retailer.

Any remote hack would depend what chip you've got, but I'm beginning to suspect you've mistaken PAL/NTSC playback for multiregion and don't in fact have a multiregion player at all...

Without a chip it's still possible to hack your machine, but it's going to be a chore unless you've got a PDA.

Might I suggest at this juncture the fabulous Philips DVP-642, which does everything including play DivX, and needs only a simple four button remote hack out of the box to be multiregion.

I don't think there is an easy handset hack for this model, having skimmed a few sites... you can buy a 'special' remote (similarly for unhackable Panasonic players) that'll enabled regions 0-6 and remove RCE for about ?20...

or you can connect it to a pc (as above) and update the firmware...

Sony DVD players are pretty much handset unhackable and almost certainly need to be chipped to make them multiregion. Unless you go the route mentioned. My player is now 4 years old and can handle RCEs fine, though admitedly I got it before I even knew what an RCE disc was. First I knew was when a mate got an import of Knight's Tale and couldn't play it on his modded machine but worked okay on mine. Sheesh that seems so long ago now...
