    f'!@~king media player !! help!

ok guys ive having some real problem with windows media player version 10. a while ago a went to play a dvd in media player and after not playing for the first 3 attempts it eventually loaded the menu. however the sound was all ****ed up, really jittery and kept on cutting out and ****. so i rolled back to version 9 and had the same problem. i tried running th3e dvd in interwin dvd player and had the same probs. i unistalled all other dvd asociated software like nero, interwin dvd player etc as i thought for some reason they may be conflicting with the drive or something. no joy: same problems. so i did a clean install of xp and everything was working fine. today, just about 3 weeks after the clean install, im getting the same problems.

so basically ive tried and eliminated : -
    a) other dvd players, like interwin
    b) uninstalling any software that may conflit with media player
    c) wmp and interwin have no probs p[laying other types of media, mpegs etc

to me this obviously points to a prob with the dvd drive hardware, yet it all works fine after a clean install of xp so im reluctant to blame the hardware either? anyone got any ideas what it could be? its driving me nuts!! cheers in advance for your help guys

tbh don't know an answer, I gave up on MP ages ago found it more hassle than it was worth, use other "non M$" video/DVD players such as BSPlayer and Power DVD.

Logic dictates: If it worked at some point and now doesn't then something happened in between.

You must be installing something that breaks your dvd playback. Dodgy codecs or something. Try using system restore to rollback to a time when it worked perhaps.

Hmm...although it could be a hardware issue, I'm thinking it's software related too. What GFX card are you using (i.e. Nvidia Geforce 6 Series or ATI Radeon)? And if so have you updated drivers for these?

Also similar to the above, but what else did you install on the clean install of XP during those 3 weeks? No help, but I have used MP 9 & 10 with Win DVD V.4 and XviD.

        Edit
        What's your soundcard?
Motherboard Chipset (i.e. Nvidia nForce 2 or VIA KT400a)?
        Installed any Motherboard Chipset drivers?

        Sorry if I'm patronising here.

yeah thats what i thought aswell but im positive that ive not installed anything like that. the only thing that i can think of is quicktime but again that was installed a while before the problems started. its really weird? im sort of convincing myself that its the dvd drive itself, maybe some heat related issue?? clutching at straws really. any more sugestions? cheers guys

gfx card is 9800se, on board sound card, not sure what mobo chip set. cant really see it being the gfx card or sound card as oyther types of media are playing fine, just seems tio be anythin running through the dvd drive. thanks for the sugestions

Spyware on your machine? This can eat up cpu time which could create a stuttering.

Worth running Ad-aware and spybot to check.

Probably not that helpful, but at least you can try searching the Microsoft knowledge base to see if you find anything. Athough it mentions changing your graphic card drivers. Have you tried this maybe?

ok so i did the system restore and everything is working fine. however i still havnt got a clue what the problem was. i can definetly eliminate the dvd drive having a problem which as yashiro pointed out must mean that its something thats been installed but for the life of me i cant figure out what. ive got a sneaky suspicion that the problem will arise again but i suppose ill just have to be more dilligent as to whats being installed on my comp. cheers for the help guys. mods this can now be closed.
