I ordered a GC mem card and a gamebit to mod my cube with from LS many moons ago, I asked them to mark it down, they said gtf, i ended up paying more in customs and the courier handling fee than the goods were worth, ive never used LS or UPS again since then.

LIk Sang in mark down shocker!

I don't use them as much as I used to, but every single game I've ordered from lik-sang has been tax-free using the free shipping or Global Priority Mail, even without being marked down.
In fact, I had a bizarre situation just before Christmas when the postie brought 3 packages to my door. One was from lik-sang with the full declared value of 80-odd Euros, and 2 were from Play-Asia that had (marked-down) values of under $50 each. The P-A packages had been inspected, and I was taxed accordingly on both. The L-S one however, escaped any such treatment...
Could it be because they ship through/from Germany?

UPS and DHL, almost always charge me, UPS is an on the door charge, while DHL make you think youve got off the hook, and then send you an invoice 2 weeks later :|
I always find the cheapest option, or the EMS options are the only ways to avoid customs, not only should you ask them to mark down the price, but to label it as a gift, or "sample" like play asia do, otherwise your asking for customs charges.

customs add postage and packing to the declared value and get the total amount payable from that
i found this out with a samba i got from Japan
the item was marked as a gift at ?17 and i was stung ?20, when i asked how that was possible they told me that ems shipping was ?24 so ?17 + ?24 took the parcel over the gift threshold

Postage is only allowed to be considered liable for duty if the item is ALREADY over the gift threshold (?38, isn't it?). So that declaration of ?17 was under the merchandise limit, let alone the gift limit - you were liable for NO DUTY OR VAT WHATSOEVER.
Claim it back, dood. They've conned you... I can provide Customs & Excise contact details for refunding their part of the charge if you like...

i phoned the number that was on the sticker when i picked up the parcel
customs is nothing to do with parcelforce - their stupid fee is
if you pay 1p towards a parcel no matter what it is, its classed as merchandise - so in reality there is no such thing as a gift (unless its from family)

BUT the ?17 declaration was still below the ?18 merchandise limit - hence shipping is not allowed to be counted towards the total liable for duty...
Are you sure you were deffo below the ?18 limit? Don't be put off by customs 'saying' something - I know loads of people on the DVD Forums who've got money back from C&E...

it was some time ago anyway and to be honest i dont get caught that much with customs so when it does happen it seems like a little payback
especially when the item was under ?18
kinda annoying since i got caught for something which was under the limit and i normally get away with really expensive items
