      i think the most popular games console resolution will be 720p in the next gen
      there are quite a few xbox1 games that run 720p/1080i.

      hdtv broadcasts can vary

        HD PDP is usually 1024x780 or 1024x1024...
        yes they aren't true 1080i but some of them do a good job of upconvert to 1080i or throwing out few lines to cut it from 1080i to 1024i...

            I wish they will do support 1080p

              Really you want a progressive resolution in my view. If TV is simply 480p I'd be happy. 1080i I think its a waste of time and they would be better off using 720p.

                HDTV Resolutions are

                720P = 1280x720

                1080 = 1920x1080

                  So when you buy a HDTV Plasma TV would you look for one that support 1920 x 1080 ? as it got to work with XBOX 4

                    In order to be compatible with the Sky HDTV system you'd better get a plasma with a HCDP compliant DVI or HDMI port because it seems that Sky are going to insist on these for at least some of their broadcasts, possible even all.

                        As Sam1981 says

                        You really need to buy a display that can do 720p/50 and 1080i/50 over DVI or HDMI, but the important bit is the HDCP.
                        At the moment that leaves the Pioneer 435/505FDE or XDE displays, and a cheap LG which isn't great and maybe one of the NEC panels but no one has confirmed teh NEC yet.

                        However!!!
                        Just about every digital display out there can do these resolutions over component, and there are boxes about that will take the hdmi out and convert to compnent so you will be able to use the new HD formats, if you don't have an HDCP display device.

                        As Neil said, a 480p display will look very good with HDTV material even though it is downscaling the image to fit.
                        A 480 panel with 1080i looks alot better than a 768 panel with dvd upscaled to 768 lines. Alot of the guys on www.avsforum.com say that if you sit more than 2 times screen width awayfrom your screen you will not really be able to tell whether the plasma is SD or HD even with a 720p signal.

                          Or you could get yourself a DLP that's fully HDTV ready and a lot cheaper. 8)
