    Vunerabilities of a v3 PS2?

Work colleague is getting a second hand PS2 off a friend of his. Having had the thing in my hand, I've identified it as being a v3 model. He's giving it to me to test it out and make sure it's fine. Any particular problems with this model I should look out for?

Yes, they're generally pretty poor and both the tray mech and the laser have a habit of dying - especially if the machine has been used to watch movies or play audio CDs on any sort of recordable media

I bought a V3 new middle of 2001, fitted flip lid case, it gets used very regulary (but do not watch any films on it/play any CDR's etc) and not one problem so far

Having tried it out at home, I can see the tray mech has a little noise when opening and closing, but it is responsive and pops out immediately. Had no problems or delays loading up DVD or CD based software, though the CDs do sound like they are humming a bit when spinning (but audio CDs are fine).

Whilst if I turn on the unit with a game already in it boots straight up, if I turn it onto standby, open the tray, insert game, and shut the tray, it seems to take ages to load up. Indicative of anything?

Dust levels were okay within the unit. Well there was some build up, but I opened the unit up to give it a clean. However in the process of doing that, something seems to have come... erm... loose! Any idea where this bit should go?

Heh, emotion engine. I'd forgotten about that one. Good ol' Sony. Anyway, I have a modded V3 with no problems although I should mention that I only use it for games - it has never been used regularly as a dvd player which can make a difference.

If it's cheap, you probably can't go wrong. If it's not cheap, I don't know - maybe hold out for a later model?

Remember when it was announced that the PS2 was capable of rendering Toy Story in realtime?
What Sony meant to say was it could play the Disney DVD! Albeit with a green tinge.

Well it isn't for me Dogg, it's a workmate buying it from his friend. He's asking ?50 for it basic, no games, no memory card. Might say he should haggle him down to ?35-40 seeing how old it is. But aside from said tray noise and that spare part I've discovered, I can't see any other problem with it.
