    Internet Explorer history problem?

    Hello,

I've got a strange problem with Internet Explorer which I would appreciate some help with. And before anyone says getting Firefox or Opera won't cure it

Basically as you do I clean out my cookies, and tempory internet files, and also history quite regularly. However I still have hangovers in the main address bar - like autocomplete. For example if I type in www.s my browser automatically suggests I want to go to www.sony.co.uk - which ordinarily would be helpful but after I've deleted cookies, history and temp internet files it shouldn't do this!

I have also run a spyware prog which claims to clean out auto complete in Explorer but it hasn't seemingly done anything?!

I know its a bit confusing and I'm not sure how to explain it properly, but if someone a little more technically minded could help me out I would appreciate it!

    Cheers

You need to clear your auto complete settings:

Tools > Internet Options > Content > Auto Complete

...from there you can turn auto complete off, and reset etc.

      Thanks for the reply.

I stumbled on that option just now and chose 'clear forms' but that doesn't seem to have done anything. I don't know if I need to restart my PC for this to take effect though? I wouldn't have thought so?!

I do like having auto complete turned on it saves me a lot of time, but most of the things its brining up are sights I rarely go to or just don't want to see. Not only that if I type other letters it will sugges going to one of my HDDs, a document I may have saved or a movie file - Why would I want to do that?!

All in all a confusing and somewhat irritating problem!

I've just realised all you need to click is 'clear history' in Internet Options to stop the brower suggesting url's.

Just tried it and it worked for me on IE SP2, although I had to restart IE for this setting to take effect.

          Hello again!

I tried this too and it still doesn't work?! I still have explorer suggesting things for me?

I don't see why it's not clearing this?

No I can't....erm what version are you on? Assume you've tried rebooting the PC?

After that it might be worth checking the Microsoft Knowledge Base to see if there's any know issues with this on IE.

so... firefox doesn't suffer from this, how would it not cure the problem along with being vastly superior?

I am on version 6 of IE.

I haven't tried rebooting the machine but I've tried clearing this off for a few days now and every morning when I boot the machine back up it's still here!

I realise Firefox probably won't give me this grief, and I do infact have Opera installed on this machine, but I would really like to fix this problem as it's annoying more than anything else!

                  Done a quick search.

What version of 6 though. Vanilla? SP1? or SP2?

Is the site in your favourites?

Some of the sites are some are not.

For example whilst I did make favorites of Sony, also in the bar it shows pages I looked at but never made favorites of?!

Clutching Straws...but in Internet Options > Advanced, there is an option called 'Use inline AutoComplete' which is OFF for me, even though AutoComplete is on for me under web address in the 'Content' tab.

What's your 'Use inline AutoComplete' option set to?

It was set to ON, so I changed it restarted and still it tried to autocomplete for me.

After turning it off, did you clear your history and then restart?

Also found this, although it doesn't explain why you URL history isn't cleared...http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...lete.mspx#EAAA
