    Identifying and activating modchips

First off, couldn't find any rules of what can and can't be discussed in this forum, so if this is a bad subject, someone let me know and I'll stfu.

I (drunkenly) bought a Japanese PS2 on ebay last night. The seller says it has an 8 wire solder mod chip installed, however the seller has never used it and doesn't know how to activate it.

    Was wondering if:

    a) anyone had any ideas of how to identify the chip.

    b) if anyone knows of any good places to go for instructions for modchips, preferably in english .

Also, the seller mentioned a "blue felt lining in the disk tray", which isn't something I've come across. Any ideas what the benefit of this is?

Hmm if its an eight wire one, its probably one of the Neo 2.2 or so configurations, which only actually lets you play backup games (cd-rs) via a swap with action reply or something.

Also - I had a one of the early launch model Japanese PS2's, and it had a slight sort of lining on the disc tray (wasnt blue though), and the whole drive felt much more sturdy than later revisions!

Thanks, not really too bothered about it playing backups. It should play other regions though, right?

Any ideas on how to activate it? I've seen a bunch of chips that you need to hold reset for a certain amount of time to activate them. Is that fairly standard?

[edit] Never mind, just found my answer. Neo 2.2 doesn't play imports. Never mind, reckon I'll just let it sit dormant then........
