Slight picture default in NTSC games

    This is more of an annoyance than a problem, but here goes;

I play NTSC games exclusively and all (including NFL Street 2, THUG2, NCAA 2004+2005, Halo 2 and others) work great. The sound quality is excellent, color and picture quality is superb and I have no problems at all.

However, on 3 games, all made by ESPN/VC (NBA, NFL and NHL 2k5 respectively), I get a slight video default. Basically, a black bar appears on the right hand side of the screen and so I lose about 2 inches of video. It kind of squeezes it up to the left a little. As I said, more of a bug-me type issue than a problem, but nevertheless - is there anything I can do to sort it out? I understand it's because of the way the producers made the game or something, in different region code, but I am under the impression it's fixable. I've tried changing a few settings on the TV and XBOX but nothing has worked as of yet.

    Thanks.

I think that's something you will have to learn to live with...
I have similar issue with various of consoles I have...

Some show the picture pushed ted bit toward left or sometimes upper left corner by about 5-10 pixel on my PDP... it usually happens when I play NTSC titles on PAL console - I have test/debug units that have no region checking...
at least I get the picture so I have no complaint...

This has always been a problem with Ntsc games through RGB Scart. I had it with my snes and then with my PS and even today.

Most good tv's, especially Sony ones now have an RGB adjustment option that let you move the image left or right.

Another thing you can do is find out how to enter your tv's service menu. This will let you adjust the whole picture and get it perfect. This is what I do with my widescreen tv, as all consoles seem to output different, so whereas the PS2 has a border on the left the xbox has one on the right and the Gamecube has borders both sides. I adjusted everything so that each console now has a full image, and it sure makes things look better.

Be cautious though, and take things step by step when using service menu's. Keep a note of the original setting numbers and never ever adjust things you don't understand.

my PDP does allow the adjustment but I never bothered to investigate any further since it's more of small nuisance than a problem...
and I have already enough problems to keep me busy anyway... ;p

Well I was playing the aforementioned "problem" games on a PAL console, but my replacement PSU for my NTSC console arrives today so maybe it will fix itself.

As I said, though, I can deal with it...just prefer not to.

It sounds like something you'd have to adjust in the service menu, as suggested above - some tvs (Toshibas etc) will allow this adjustment from the main 'options' menu.

If you DO faff with the service menu, as per the caveat above, write EVERY SINGLE VALUE DOWN and be aware that you can irrevocably bugger your settings which can only be fixed by a factory reset (by an engineer, depending on tv).

I have the exact same problem which is very inconsistent over the 3 main consoles. My XB is fine with all NTSC&PAL games except PE4 which is PAL.

My PS2's are the worst(us&jap) with all games tbh!, and the cube is not bad but only a couple of games have this problem.

I was going to adjust the pic in my servic emenu but decided to leave it in case I fecked the TV. I might give it a go now tho.......

I get it with the ESPN games also. Don't know why...but it's a pain in the arse.

You get this effect when using RGB on just about everything, machines like the Xbox produce an image larger than the screen size so you might not get such a large border. The Gamecube's screen position can be adjusted from the console's menu but what I've done is set my TV via it's menu moving the image to the right slightly, the same position is fine for all machines I have.

PAL games get it the worst - you've got 3 borders to deal with

Yes, but it is worse on the ESPN games. Any idea why?

                        Same here...

My volume bar shows up when I change volume in no NTSC games, ALL PAL games, but at least the other NTSC games play perfect screen size.

It's just ESPN that gives the bar.

All games are not made equal, whereas some games on my Xbox fit the screen perfectly, others can have borders either side or be stretched too much.

Sometimes you just have to put-up with the odd problem, especially if you don't want to spend a few hours within the service-menu adjusting everything until all your consoles look perfect.

All TV's have these problems, so don't think there's something wrong with yours.

                            yep!
and once you are into playing you don't notice those anyway...
