Bout ?125 I think. If you`re still after a quad channel raid card I`ve got the exact IDE equivalent that you can have for a ton (3Ware Escalade 7506-4LP).

thats a kick ass rig my friend, congrats. 1tb of memory, thats crazy! imagine how much **** you could hold on that ****er, probably something crazy like a terabyte or something mad like that! still suppose in a couple of years that will be pretty much standard?! yeah id agree on the 6800 gfx card, its pretty quality.

Am I missing something? Obviously you can store one terabyte of information on it. That's why it's called a ONE TERABYTE STORAGE CAPACITY.

That's why it's called, 'taking the piss'.

After it struggled with 3dMark 2001, now fitted with my trusty NVidia Quadro4 NVS200, I thought I`d try a DVD-ripping race, like I did with my dual athlon and P4. That time the dual MP2000 2GB PC2100R completed a high quality 2GB DivX rip in 1 hour 45 minutes (using this exact raid array), whereas the P4 2.8ghz 1GB PC3200 did it in 2 hours exactly.

This time I set everything on each machine to be absolutely identical, even down to what was running after a fresh boot in task manager. So against a 2.8 P4 with a gig of PC3200 ram heres how the Opteron did. Both were set to compress Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure to a 2GB DivX using Auto Gordian Knot.

            Task / Dual Opty 248 2GB PC3200R / P4 2.8 1GB PC3200

            Rip: 04m02s / 05m18s
            Compression Test: 01m35s / 03m43s
            Pass 1: 00h25m34s / 01h01m20s
            Pass 2: 00h27m53s / 00h47m58s

            Total Time: 00h59m / 02h00m

Should also point out that the P4 was unusable during encoding, and wouldn`t even run the pipes screensaver normally, whereas the Opteron would happily load as many programs as I wanted with normal responses (tried Nero, Pinball, Media Player, and DivX Player). CPU usage was locked at 100% throughout for the P4, and the Opterons were at about 65-75% throughout.

It won`t run everything with that much advantage obviously, as not many programs use SMP, but it was built to do everything my old dually could without being slower, and do everything the p4 could without being slower. So if it runs games as quick as the P4 + 9800 Pro when its fitted with a 6800GT that`ll do nicely.

to answer your question, yes you are missing something; a sense of humor

A mate of mine has just built a Dual Opteron Pc with the Iwill SFF case, he has the cpu's up from you, 2gb + 2x 300gb maxtor 10's. Here is the bit that may interest you - he has a 6800GT in it and has zero problems with it. He did alot of looking and the NV cards are totally fine whereas the ATI cards have issues (as do clabs soundcards - but then they always did with smp)

Me im going dual but the G5 variety

                Congrats on a awesome rig

                  OK I slated ASUS in the past for there complete lack of making a decent motherboard that doesn't overheat even on stock tempreture, but when I plan to upgrade my second PC I think I will put it in this case;

                  Mmmmmmm...

Ive used loads of Asus boards and they are my board of choice as long as peep pay the extra. Motherboards dont overheat so i dont get what ur saying ?

And that case is nasty beyond reason

Northbridges can get a bit toasty.

This is true but my P4C800 was running 500fsb with the standard Asus NB heatsink with no worries.

I generally think the Build Quality of Asus is tip topp - they are very highly regarded in the industry and many things consumers buy are made by Asus without knowing it.

Thats interesting for a different reason shimmyhill thanks: was maybe going to add an Audigy at some point. Thanks for the 6800GT confirmation - I`ve talked some new retail pc vendors we deal with into letting me test a 6800GT before I buy it which is a luxury most people don`t have.

Does the IWill have any overheating problems etc? I was THAT close to buying one of those instead of the setup I got but was a bit worried about power consumption from the tiny psu, and relative lack of space for cooling. Cheers d00d.

Well my m8 wantd to get the low power opterons but the wait was too long so he got the standards. His onlu complaint is that when you start to use the cpu's the fans spin up and it sounds like a tornado taking off. On idle he says its very quiet, but it doesnt take much for the fans to spin up.

He has run lots of tests and has had no probs, in use its rock solid stable so no issues there.

As for the Audigy id do my homework if i where you, back when i ran a dual celron rig the drivers didnt run with smp - looking at 2cpu.com and it still seems it hasnt been totally sorted

i love the case but looking at sonics pics it looks massive i only have 1 hdd, 2 dvd drives and neo power psu so it would look bare but thinking of going watercooling.

the cross flow fan looks interesting, would you need any case fans at all with that ?
