2 network cards. Specifiy ip address can't access internet???

I've just put a second network card in my machine, so that i can connect my xbox to my pc. I specify an ip address for the nic card and my machine won't access the internet then. The cable modem i have is connected to the other card on my machine, and the settings remain unchanged.

Any idea why i can't access the internet when i specify an ip address on the other network card???

What IP address does the network card connected to the cable modem have when you specify an IP on the second one?

Did you disable "Obtain IP address automatically" on the "internet" network connection?

Not at the machine right now, so can't check. But it is set on obtain an address automatically, do i need to disable this then?

I'm on Telewest Blueyonder and i'm using a motorola surfboard modem.

Nah, the IP of the adapter connected to the cable modem should be set to obtain an IP automatically...

In fact it shouldn't interfere with the other one at all!

What other steps did you take?

I thought it shouldn't interfere. But when i enable the card and specify the ip, it stops the internet working, if i disable the card the internet works again???? Windows firewall is disabled as well??

Well, "stops working" could be anything... not much I can do when you're not in front of the PC either unless there's any additional info you can offer.

Did you try something like bridging connections? Did you enable internet connection sharing etc etc?

Sorry to be so vague. I've been told that it might be a problem with the cards occupying the same subnet mask. I'll post my ip config when i get back in. Thanks for the help anyway.

sorted it, got rid of the default gateway in the second network card properties and it works fine.
