Strange issue concerning 16/32 bit programs...

I'm sitting infront of a PC with problems that I am unable to identify.

The owner of the PC has attempted to remove AvG 6.0 and replace it with AvG7.0, however, a peculiar error message occurs: "C:\windows\system32\autoexec.int" is not suitable for running MS-dos apps etc... And the header of the box says '16 bit'.

When trying to install AvG 6.0 again, in a vein attempt to solve the problem brought up this message indicating that the .exe file 'Is not a valid win32 application.'

When trying to upgrade Spydoctor (a spyware removal program) a message indicating that the CRC is incompatible appears.

SP2 has recently been installed, and everything appears to be up-to-date, and the person is able to run games like Rome: Total War with apparently few issues, which is what perplexes me so greatly.

When the computer starts up, a file Backweb7288971.exe encounters a problem (it appears to be trying to connect to the internet, some kind of 'fault address') and then closes down. I assumed that it was possibly spyware, however, I'm not totally sure becuause current scans with spyware checkers come out negative.

Equally, other strange problems appear to be popping up as the printer and the scanner were uninstalled by the person in question, and cannot be reinstalled, probably with a similar message or issue.

I'm really not sure what the issue is, and rollback will not work for some reason, whether there are many problems which need to be addressed, or even one small fix will solve everything. Clearly though, I'm missing something, and would really appreciate it if you could possibly suggest what I need to in order to solve this.

    Thanks in advance:

    -Mike

    The PC has been "boned".

She phoned up MS in the end, and they fannied around in the registry, and apparently it was the Netsky virus which caused the problem. She was unable to tell me exactly what she did, however they were very useful in solving the problem and everything is fine now.
