back up to DVD/CD

Is there any program out there which can backup the OS to DVD or CD?

I was told norton ghost but after using it i figured u cant restore the OS from scratch!

I want to make a backup of my OS so that in the case where my com dies i could just boot the computer with the DVD/CD and away it goes restores my com back to the state i want it to be!
