Love RE4, what previous RE games should I get ?

So gripped by RE4 I want to pick up a few of the previous RE titles, only other one I've played in RE Code Veronica on PS2. Would prefer GC versions but if they are on another console or are better on a different console no problem.
Prehaps experienced RE'ers could post their top two or three favourite RE games (excluding RE4).

    Many thanks.

I would suggest REmake and RE2, as you've already played Code Veronica.

RE2 should be particularly interesting for you as you learn the past of Leon, Claire (from CV) and Ada. The graphics are dated though, even on GC.

Not played 4 yet but this is how I see it

      1. REmake (GC)
      2. Resi 2 (psx/GC)
      3. Resi CV (DC/PS2/GC)
      4. Resi 3 (psx/GC)
      5. Resi 0 (GC)

there's also some good RE 'wannabe's' like:

      Parasite Eve 1/2
      Dino Crisis 1 (not 2 !!!)

which are all for the psx...
enjoy, these are all some of my fav. games of the last years.

exterrnal darkness could be another one and Silent Hill sereis might be worth a look I haven't play them. I got External Darkness for a year and haven't even tried it out. I will do it once I complete Resident Evil 4 and 1

Why does ResiZero get such bad press? I quite enjoyed it actually.

But after Resi4, definitely go for Resident Evil 2 next...

Or just start from the...start? I've enjoyed the whole series, but don't expect another Resi4 when you start playing, they're a different breed altogether really..

I love them all as well but the lack of item boxes (traditionalist that I am/ shining stuff on the floor everywhere) and the partner system (didn't work well imo/ hindered game-flow) in RE 0 is what puts it behind the others.

REmake and Resident Evil 2 are great, while RE3 is decent but nothing special. Zero is terrible and CV is only worth playing if you get nostalgic over old Dreamcast games.

I dunno, I thought Zero was fundimentally an excellent game. If only they hadn't essentially crippled the game by removing item boxes and using the confusing partner system... they pretty much hinder enjoyment. If you can manage to push past that, you have the same good ol' Resi gameplay under there. Which I like.

thanks for the input, excuse my "noobness" (TM) but is REmake just RE1 but on the Cube ? if not, did it get a PAL release ?

                  cheers.

PS. guessing Dead Aim and Survivor Series get the thumbs down

Yeah, it's the Cube remake of the first game. Even if you don't bother with any if the others, make sure you get that one.

It`s a remake of the original but with far far better graphics, new zombies, new areas and new puzzles. And yes it did get a pal release. You can pick it up for around ?5 in gamestation so it aint gonna break the bank. If you never played the original your in for a treat. Great game. As for Resi 0 why is everyone so down on it i thought it was a pretty decent title and the co-op between the characters worked very well in parts. TBH though i enjoyed and completed all the resi games. Definately go for the remake first though and if you enjoy that and can take a down grade in graphics then go for resi 2 and if you want more go for code veronica. If you want any more then resi 0 and last resi 3 is the order i would put them in.

One main reason, in my case. They get rid of the item boxes, supposedly to prevent you from having to keep travelling backwards and forwards just to pick up an item that you need for a certain section - fine, great, all good.

But then you get to that part on the train, pretty early in, where the two characters split up. You've now got to keep going backwards and forwards all the time, because the one is in the right place to pick up items, but the place you're supposed to use them is only accessible by the other character, so you have to travel to the only part of the train where you can pass items over to each other. If anything, it was worse than leaving the item boxes in.

                          Kinda funny that bit actually...

                          (Possible spoilers here...)

I'd spent ages transporting my items from place to place, running back and forth with both characters.... moved all my items when we first went underground, behind that painting in the main hall... course, didn't know we were only gonna be in there for 5 minutes, so had to move all the junk back again (this took about 5 trips each way!, avoiding the spiders)... later in the game I had to move all my items up to the observation tower to progress past the mansion (5 trips or so again, avoiding the cockroach things)... again to move all my items down the bloody lift... then move them all in front of the train... then *into* the train... then moving them further etc etc...

... and then of course, you find out you can access the mansion main hall from the lift, behind where you kill Tyrant. So you could have just left everything there!

Yes, very annoying... and you didn't know until you'd nearly completed the game, and I'd say it added more than an hour onto playtime.

You really, really miss the item boxes when your doing all that.

Resident Evil 2 is my personal favourite. Sure, the original and Dreamcast versions look a little ropey compared to the remake, but I think it was the stronger game. It had an amazing atmospere as well as some sick **** characters.

I never really got on with Code Veronica. I don't know whether it was the bizarre angle-changing of the camera, or the difficulty level (I found it to be the hardest RE by far), but to this day, I have never finished it.
