    wireless soho

Right chaps, have been charged with setting up the following in the next week or so, and figured I'd draw on your network experience here.

We are a team of 4 moving into a new office, into which we'll have a dsl connection. We need 3 desktop PCs and a laptop, so it has been suggested (for the sake of portability and possibility of moving offce at a later date, you know what charities are like) that we go down the wireless route.

Basically then, I figured we're looking at:

    3 P4s with wifi
    1 centrino lappy
some sort of wireless router (netgear DG834G?)

We'll all be running XP naturally, so any suggestions on the hardware and the setting up of the software/simple peer to peer stuff? I'll probably just setup mine or the admin's pc with a shared folder for a central file store.

We have a 2 person office with:
    Eclipse DSL
    Netgear DG834G (WEP, MAC encoding)
2 Centrino laptops running off the wireless
3 PCs of various age Cat5'ing into the router (faster than wireless, and we're not going to move them). Cheapest PCs we could find but with extra RAM.
    XBox on Cat5
Two oversized beanbags and a 28inch TV
    Cheap fax/copier/scanner combo machine - HP all-in-one
Decent (but still cheap) laser printer - HP 1300

Get a 4th PC as a server if you can (a cheap one with storage + DVD) as it's much easier to administer. We have a central dir on there for all shared stuff and company docs, this gets backed up to DVD every week (except for the folder called 'NoBackup'). The idea is that you don't need to backup anything on the clients - I actually use the Windows Briefcase (which I never saw the point of before) to copy my PST and other junk to the shared folder prior to backup. Printer etc plugged into the server. In our case we have a keyboard/monitor/mouse switch for the 3 PCs so there's not too much clutter - I'm also running VNC on my laptop.

If you really have those in your office, I hate you!
