    Changing DVD Drive Firmwares

I've got a DVD Rom and a DVD burner on my PC, I want to make both of them region free, I have used this website http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php to find the right firmware for my drives. I have found there is more than one version of firmware listed for most drives, the version of firmware my drives have do not currently have an alternative region free enabled firmware update. If however, I was to use another version of firmware for my drive that is region free, would it be ok? Is it best to stick with the same version that my drive was bought with or can it be updated just the same as you update graphics card drivers? - the newer the better kinda thing.

I've updated the firmware on my DVD-burner twice now with nothing but good effects (first one unlocked extra speed, second was for more speed and dual-layer!)

I say go for it, but as always, changing firmware can knacker your drive blahdeblahblahblah..... do it at your own risk.

As a rule only use the firmware for your drive, unless your drive is just a rebadge from another manufacturer.

The easiest non-flash fix is to use a software solution. DVD Region Free, AnyDVD etc.
They usually work fine although sometimes they're a bit temperamental.

to find out what firmware your drive has use DISCinfo 1.55, it wil tell you the drive revision and anything else

you can get it from http://discinfo.rpc1.org/

also check using a program called Drive Region Info to make sure its not already region free, that is also available on the website you mention under utils
