Entropia has moved on from 2005, when it was last mentioned here. It is and will remain free to download and play, with no need to register any credit cards or other bs.
The economy in this virtual is real. The ingame currency - the PED - is linked to the USD by a rate of 1 USD = 10 PED. the easiest way to withdraw funds from Entropia is to have a bank account registered with your avatar.
Some people make a living of playing EU, some lament their losses. If you play EU smart you can play forever without ever making a single cent deposit. If you want to get off the ground a bit faster, you can invest 20-30 USD or so - goes a long way for a new player. All the way if you have time and mind your economy.
For me one major aspect of EU is the community. There are people from most corners of the world, of very different ages, with wildly varying backgrounds. There are one or two wikis, about 5 web based radio stations, a number of forums and off course chats galore.
A number of Entropians are good and willing mentors. A few are bad and willing mentors - but those are fast recognised by the community. So if you hop in, ask around and check the forums before you get a Mentor. On that, having a Mentor is not mandatory. But a good one will make a difference. Plus upon graduation you will get (free) a actually good starter armor set (and some other bits).
The Entropia Universe is now a playground of 6 planets and 3 major space stations. You do not log into different servers (well you do, but all is online together). The only concern is where to start - what planet. Opinions differ, I'd suggest planet Arkadia (good starter missions and helpful community) but read up yourself before you start.
EU is not for everyone. My impression is that new players either hop out after a week or two, or stay for years. Love or hate. Entropia has been described as having a steep learning curve. I am not sure. Yes, there is a lot to learn, but also there's no stress. Basics, like movement and making shortcut keys etc is simple. You dont have to fight everywhere, loads to explore without any need for action. PvP areas are defined on your map. And you can find rescourses with commercial value (stones, fruit) on the ground as you run around.
Entropia is a solid game that never needed the CryEngine2 upgrade - like PacMan and Tetris the game is in itself good enough not to need fancy wrappings.
I am "John Erastothenes Bluetail" avatar. Medium skilled player. Happy to take a ingame call if you hop by.
