    Slayers install disk info wanted

    Hi all,
I think i've read that if I use this disk it means I don't have to FTP from my xbox to my PC to install evox dashboard etc. Is this true? But the thing is I only seem to see it mentioned when people are talking about upgrading their xbox hard drive which I'm not doing. So can this disk still be used if you aren't upgrading the hard drive? What applications does it have on it?

    cheers,

    Shenbop

You need a chip in the Xbox just to read the disc m8, let alone for it to install!

Oh yeah, I did know that. I probably should have mentioned that I'm getting my xbox chipped in under a week (hopefully)

if you have a new model modchip which can boot from the evox dashboard then no pc is required - but if you have an older model modchip then a pc is needed since u need to alter the evox configuration file which is stored on your xbox (you need to ftp it to your pc, change it and ftp it back), you also need to rename 2 xbe files to get your evox dash to boot

if you have an executer II you can do everything from the cd, boot with the chip on then install.

to be honest though I would put a new drive in and leave your original drive safe somewhere just in case.

the cd even contains the latest bios so you can flash your chip to make it compatible with the cd.

you get a choice with the cd

original h/drive no switch on chip
          origianl h/drive with switch

new h/drive no switch on chip
          new h/drive with switch

awesome disc and you cant really go wrong, it even installs all the apps you really need to do the main things that you would want to do with you xbox.

make sure that you get a chip that you can disable and the latest bios is on it, and if you are given the choice get one you can flash with a pc.

why would you want all thewse apps without a bigger drive anyway ????

What do you mean by; a "switch", are you talking about the little mod disable switchs that can go on the outside of the xbox?

Is it really that essential to get a chip which I can disable if I NEVER plan to go on 'Live' ?
xecutor 2 lite can be flashed without a pc can't it? with a certain program and the new bios on a cdrw/dvdr?

I heard that all the stuff like boxxplorer, dvdx2, media player etc only takes up around 40-50 mb of space on the xbox so i don't think I really need a new hard drive. I also plan to play emu's etc straight from a dvd/cd rather than from the hard drive so I wouldn't need space for that on the hard drive.

If I don't get a new hard drive then can I still choose between the ms dashboard and evo x dashboard if installing evox from the slayers disk?

Also, anyone know when the redesigned xecutor 2 lite is going to be on sale (the one with the blue led's and mod disable switch pre fitted)?

Thanks for all your help so far!

yeah , the swith is under a quid and worth putting on.

as long as you never go on live or try to sell it on, it wont matter.

Slayers disc will let you flash it so it is not essential.

if that all you want it for fine, but you are not backing up your original drive via ftp so I would seriously consider putting a new drive in and keeping the original one safe somewhere.

you can do that with the origianl hard drive or a new drive, but you turn the switch off to get into the original dash and keep the xbox like a retail unit.

you could solder this switch yourself it really is soooo easy and worth the effort, however even if you dont put a switch on I would choose the install method

with a switch because you could add it later.

I'm still not entirely sure why I would need a new drive, is it just incase something goes wrong with the slayers disk and screws up the hard drive?

most people back up there drive for peace of mind, so you can get it back to factory state.

or buy a used 10gig drive off somone for a tenner and use that.

you are typing this on a pc i take it so why not just ftp in using slayers disc, back up the c:\ drive on your xbox and while you are there back up the e:\ as well (all your game saves etc.)

it takes 2 mins, even if you dont have a network card you can buy a card and cable for under ?15

If I do get a card and cable can I install all the other applications like media player and dvdx2 by FTP'ing? If I did do it all by FTP I wouldn't need to buy a second hard drive would I?
Basically the reason I didn't want to FTP was because i read the tutorials on how to do it and it seemed really complicated, so I was looking for an easier option (i.e. slayers). A cross over cable is a phone/modem cable isn't it, but with both ends the same as the end that goes into the computer?

                      you need a cat 5 x-over cable.
you need a 100mbit ethernet card.

run slayers, guve your xbox an ip address, say 192.168.1.10 and you network card say 192.168.1.1 and both the same subnet mask 255.255.255.0

then in your ftp program set the host name as 192.168.1.10 port21 user/pass xbox/xbox

                      then ftp into the xbox

you will see the drives on the xbox in one window and your pc in the other

make a new directory on your c:\ drive of your pc called XBOX
then a fold called back up

                      so you have c:\xbox\backup

                      then make 2 folders

                      C and E

copy the contents of the C and E drives of the xbox into these folders on your pc.

reboot the xbox with slayers disc in there and choos to install

evox on original h/drive with switch

wait 5 mins and it will be done

reboot and you should be up and running with all your original data safe on your pc

you may want to ftp back in and transfer the E folder that you saved back onto the E:\ drive of the Xbox, that way all your game saves will still be there when you go to play them.

you may have to unlock the xbox drive at some point during the above but it will prompt you if you need to. and then you will need to lock it again if you want to boot into the xbox origianl dash, but this can be done with an app included on slayers install.
