    Windows 98 won't shut down?

Had my PC for about 5 years, and have never had any major problems.

Now all of a sudden I can not shut down 9 times out of 10. When I click on the start button to get the option to shut down the start button depresses and sticks without any options coming up.

If I ctrl/alt/del and try to shut down that way nothing happens either. So I have to actually turn the power off each time I shut down now.

I have run lots of Virus checking stuff and checked for adware etc.

    Any help would be great.

Windows 98 is pretty terrible, when's the last time you reinstalled it? I know when I had it for years I had to reinstall at least every 7 or 8 months to get it back to norm.

Mmm, sounds like one of those Win98 oddities that occur for no apparent reason, hehe. Still, could be worse... if you were running WinME, it would prolly BSOD on you instead

I don't know what the cause could be. You could try downloading a program called enditall, which will allow you to close processes that could be causing the issue, but this would only be a workaround. I'd personally reinstall, or upgrade to a newer o/s such as Win2K or XP.

There was a patch released for this, it's a known problem.

        Search on support.microsoft.com for it.

          Thanks for that.
It seems to have cured itself today for some reason.

I will check on the microsoft sight for updates or try to acquire a newer OS.

yeah i remmber this well, dont know if it will be the same for you but i seem to remember it occured with PC's that had network cards installed. Somthing to do with windows not stopping looking for networks connections when trying to shut down.

I've got this problem at the moment, im using win2kpro and until installed the new windows update earlier this week, shutting down either takes forever or not at all.
