    ps2 import games that do not work fine on a modded machine

    Hi,
    seems noone is collecting this info anywhere on the net,
    the reviewer of the "strikers 1945 I&II" package
    suggested it would be good material for a sticky thread
    in "general gaming".

    so here it begins, over all my import games only:

    -strikers 1945 I&II
    - initial D special stage

    do not work properly on my ripper2 gold chipped pal machine,
    they both play in 50 hz.

    waiting for a moderator to consider it ...

    Initial D does play in 60hz on my Messiah 2 chipped PS2. It doesn't however output digital audio from the SPDIF. Not sure what the game does on a proper Jpn machine though, so it may be the way its been designed?

      on my pal machine, it boots in 60hz, the intro movie displays only a black screen, and it then switches to 50hz.

      other witnesses of "annoying" import games?

        I've never heard of a Ripper 2? Is it a recent mod chip?

        Anyway I've got a Messiah 1 modded PAL PS2 and it plays everything I've thrown at it perfectly including Initial D and DVD-9 (dual layered) imports such as GT4 and Xenosaga.

          I've got a Matrix Inifinity modded White PS2 and mine has played everything I've thrown at it thus far with no problems.

            from what I've heard the ripper 2 is basically a dms3 modchip;
            only 2 out of 20 import games I own fail to boot in 60hz.

            basically I've modded my machine a year and a half ago;
            it's not that old. But if you say messiah works well with initial D,
            it gets me interested !

              I wouldn't get too excited if i were you. The PS2 version of Initial D isn't a patch on any of the arcade releases. IMO of course.

                When Special Stage came out the Initial D soundtrack was hot property so digital sound out was disabled purposely to prevent people from using the sound test to easily rip the OST. A few other PS2 games have done the same (Parappa 2 springs to mind).

                As for my machine, never had a problem with any game whatsoever (including Initial D which regularly gets cained). Sound slike it may be your type of chip that is causing the issue, rather than it being games that don't like modded machines in general.

                  Cheers for that. Never even occured to me that it might have been disabled on purpose. I just thought it was either the chip or an oversight when Sega released the game.

                    and there i was planning on either changing my messiah 1 for a newer chip, or selling my v5 ps2 and getting a newer, quieter model (probably not slimline thanks to the laser probs) and modding that.

                    good to hear that the messiah 1 still cuts the mustard.

                    if it ain't broke...

                      Are there firmware updates for the Ripper range, like there are for the DMS range? This could solve your problem.
