    Need a new hard drive

I need to replace my failing hard drive on my PC but I'm not really sure what to go for. My motherboard manual says it supports UDMA 66 and it uses IDE. But I'm not sure if I can go above UDMA 66, since I've seen very few sites selling those types of hard drives. I was thinking of getting this hrad drive. Will it be ok?[/url]

Any IDE/ATA Hard drive will be fine. Even the newest models are backwards compatible. There's no need to worry.

Steer clear of 'Serial ATA' drives as they are a different type and will not work on your current PC.

The drive you linked to seems fine. Although if you're on broadband you might soon fill up that 40Gig. Personally, I'd get something a little larger with an 8mb ram cache.

You might as well get the 60gb hard drive from here http://www.simply.co.uk/default.asp?...ail/ec0110.asp its only 50p more expensive then the 40gb one on the other site.

          Depends.

I have 2 maxtor diamondmax drives and they are utterly silent. My last IBM drive was almost the noisiest component I had.

I couldn't recommend an IBM drive to anyone these days.
They used to make stellar drives. Not anymore.

I've had personal experience of their shoddy units and so have many others. A class action suit was even launched against them in the US.
I don't doubt that their drives can work well, but their failure rate has been very high lately.

I'd stick with WD, Seagate or even Maxtor.

I ended up getting a Western Digital Special Edition hard drive with an 8MB cache. But only 40GB.

For ?60 too, so not bad. I'm not really gonna use all of it anyway, so I thought there was no point in getting an 80GB version. Will the bigger cache be better for watching DivX films?

Had my 4th IBM drive die this morning (lasted 1mnth 3 days) (3rd replacement) this was supposedly a more reliable 120gxp instead of the problematic 60 and 75 gxps.

Saying that i had a maxtor diamond max die in my xbox after a month as well.

I'm just well unlucky and it says somethng when i use a 5 year old seagate 4.3 gb drive to back up all the important stuff.

no, it is very cpu dependant so you need a fast cpu and also as much ram as you can get.
