    Ibook Batteries and Office

Does it ruin the battery if you leave it plugged in over night? The Ibook is off, but the green light stays on.

Also, where's the best place to get Apple Office? Can you get it free anywhere?

    Cheers

    Scott

It doesn't ruin it so long as you let the battery discharge maybe 50% and recharge 3 - 4 times a month or so I'm told.

There is no Apple Office, there's the MS version and you need to pay for it.

Ah, that's what I meant. Where's the cheapest place to buy that?

4 charges a month! Vest if I run it off the mains most of the time then. If not i'd be charging it every day.

Actually, I was always told that you should let a battery run out fully before recharging it, i take it this isn't true?

The running flat thing only applied to the Ni-Cad batteries that have now been superceeded by the Lithium-Ion batteries which have no 'memory'.

If you want an office suite for cheap - go for OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org). It's free and does pretty much everything (I still prefer Word+Visio for technical documents but that's a few hundred quid).

In fact, letting the battery on an Li Ion battery fully discharge isn't good for it apparently.

As for Office... these things tend to be price fixed. If you're a student, or can pretend to be, you'll get a discount.

I leave my Powerbook plugged in overnight all the time. It's fine for it, though calibrating the battery through a full discharge/charge routine never does it any harm. They're Li-ion; once they're calibrated right, they're pretty hard to bugger up. All that will happen is over time, they'll lose charge. Technically, you should replace them every 12 months; my PB battery is 2 years old and in not too bad shape, but nowhere near as good as when I got it. (This is the joy of Applecare: it covers a free new battery every year, as well as repairs, etc).

I scored the student version of MS Office 2004 on ebay a few days ago for ?44inc, boxed in good condition with manual. Keep your eyes peeled, you'll find a bargain if you are patient

If it's for Word and Powerpoint that you want MS Office (i.e. you don't care about Excel and Access), forget it and go for Apple's iWork, comprised of Pages (best word processor ever, bar none) and Keynote (very good Powerpoint substitute, although I haven't used it a lot). Both applications read and write MS Office files with very good compatibility.

With the Apple education discount, you can get iWork from about 40 pounds, and it's worth every penny.

By the way, the Mac version of Word is an absolute piece of ****, which for no reason at all sucks up about 20% of CPU time when it's doing nothing.

Btw I had a look at applecare and it says in the T&A that batteries are classed as wear and tear items which will not be replaced... (Paleface) How do you get a new battery each year then ? ( I quite fancy getting a ibook to go with my mini!)

Why would you get a new battery each year?

I still get 3.5 hours out of mine 12 months later...
