              Totally screw your television set

http://www.members.accessus.net/~090/awh/sonypal.html - will give you a good idea of what options are in there.

Indeed. If you're a tech pleb don't even try it. You will knack your TV.

It can be useful as it can give some TVs a handy RGB mode for the SCART socket, doesn't sound useful but it means that the picture is centred correctly and leads not fully wired up with Pin 16 can be used, no more dark picture or shadows.

Is there anyway to make both the scarts RGB?

no... some Sony TVs just allow you to switch to RGB manually if they normally autoswitch. The hardware has to support it in the first place.

There are big differences between service modes for different series of Sony hardware. My tv auto switches, but allows me to choose manually aswell.

For my TV I fixed the aspect ratio and widened the blanking in 4:3 mode so that I could see more of the picture. I also squeezed the picture size so that almost everything fits within the screen.

As mentioned, you can seriously knacker your tv settings by playing with service mode. If you are going to do it, document the original settings (not necessarily the default settings, the tv will have been tweaked to suit the tube) and every change you make. I used the THX DVD optimiser to fix the aspect ratio, and switched between a bunch of consoles at 50 and 60Hz to make sure nothing was being clipped. It took about 1/2 a day to perfect
