Game saves on Gensx

Been having some trouble saving my progress while playing Shining Force with gensx. I go to the chapel and save the game, but this doesn't always work!?

Do I have to save state as well (left trigger and the black button I think?) or should it save correctly by just using normal game save technique?

It's a bit annoying when I've levelled up all my characters and then lose all my progress.

Personally speaking, I'd always use Save State, rather than rely on the game to save it for me - remember your game may be looking for a battery back-up in its cart (which doesn't exist seeing as you're using a rom).

So if I press the left trigger and black button simultaneously it will save the game at the exact point I am on?

How do I load it after? Letf trigger and white button?
