    56K help

anyone know of any ways to make 56k faster?

    thanks

Been nearly three years since my 56k days, but in my day:

    1. Use a decent ISP, particularly avoiding certain packages for gaming. This changed slightly when 'friaco' 24/7 packages started to appear. ClaraNET gave me the best pings on any HL online games.
    2. Edit the config file on HL for the best 56k settings. Changing rates, decals, turning bullits decals off. All helped on TFC, DOD etc. Again could apply to other online games and certainly lots of guides over the net.
    3. Use an external v.90/v.92 modem. Serial doesn't matter here, and I used the Diomond 56e External modem, which made a world of difference over using an internal generic modem originally in my PC. Why? Becuase the internal one relied on using system resources.

Not sure if that's what you mean, maybe not, but hope that might help. But still with various ADSL and Cable packages being soo available now, and welled priced, can't you get Broadband?

The external modem and decent ISP will help to some degree. But ultimately if you've been spoilt with BB, then yes an analog 56k connection will be slow.

The argument to your dad, is that BB cost pretty much the same as dial-up, doesn't jam the phoneline, and you can get BB with providers where you don't have to sign a contract (although you'll pay a penalty fee if you leave in first 12months, Pipex for example).

Still maybe the other man is right, good luck in your exams...

thanks for the help Mgear, but ive already used all the arguments youve stated, and he says that if the phone is engaged, then i have less time to use the internet. but still its only two or three months. how much can i miss in that long anyway?
