    opening ports for better downloads

I've recently upgraded my NTL 750k to 2meg (yay!) but Im not getting a big difference on my downloads (BOO!)

A mate of mine has told me that I need to open the ports from my Netgear wi-fi router. Basicly any p2p or BT software isnt giving me 100k plus downloads when my other mates are getting even better than this.

Can anyone help me out? Netgear CS was useless. I know its something to do with my router settings but beyond that Im scooby doo-less

I found instructions for my router on this site, might be of use to you:
An explanation of port forwarding and the necessary steps to set up port forwarding in your router.

There's also a list of common ports too.

                yeah, replied Nick, cheers!

I;ve opened the ports up in my router AND Im using portfinder.com to configure Azuereus. My mates recommended me BitTornado as its meant to be 'better'.

Thanks for all the quick replies, I'll be back if no success

Azerueus should open the ports its self using PnP (if your router supports it), there isn't a better torrent client IMO.

Once thing to-do is limit your upload speed, not too much but a few k under your max (watch the uploads as they are, it should take all it can get) you need a few k/sec spare to return the packets or your downloads slow.

Try Bitcomet for a NAT freindly BT client.

Bash how did you get on as I am having the same problem i've upgraded from 512k to 2mb and my downloads are actually slower yet the settings worked fine before I've checked the ports and also made sure windows has enough outbound TCP connections but to no success. Anyone got any pointers?

yup same has happened to me, i have all the relvant ports opened and i even tried it connected direct to ntl cable box.

I have used netlimiter to stop a massive amount of upload speed going out as well and it still makes no difference.

Must be these NTL connections, wounder if they throttle the bandwidth on certain ports or summit?

going to try bit comet i have read about that its good for this problem

Just to updat, I formated my drive as I was having far too many problems. It wasnt just DL issues, but also IE6 and java as both were fooked!

Anyway, didnt bother with Azureus this time round, went straight in with BitTornado and used one of the torrents from Tekken zaibatsu.com for one of their combo videos. 5 mins in and it reached 280k+!!!!

Problem solved I reckon, I should've formated my drive yonks ago anyway but thanks for everyone who posted or PM'ed much appreciated

Some Azureus versions, especially hacked ones, have been known to cause problems.
