    index.html question.

I've just got my webspace registered so I can host stuff. I use it as a place just to dump files for posts and such like, so I want to be able to view the root directory and pick from the files, yet, when I try, it tells me:

This user has not yet uploaded their index file.(index.htm,index.html or index.shtml)
All I want is a basic list of the files I've uploaded on my front page. What can I do to achieve this?

Most servers are configured so that if you go to a folder rather than a specific page or file then they send people off to the index.blah or default.blah pages.

Its usually a question of setting the permissions on the server so that users have browse folder permission.

      I see... ?

I think I'm just going to have to add to the index page with a link to the image each time I upload something

        Its probably easiest

You could always just send a query to your web hosts. They may set it up for you.

I use Lycos Tripod to host stuff and I just type in the adress without the /index.html or whatever and it gives a list of every section and subsection I am hosting. Very useful.

I'm with Pipex and using FlashFXP to transfer files. I can't see anything like .htaccess...

I'm not able to view directory contents on the webspace that my isp (blueyonder) provides either. I set permissions for the directory accordingly, but when I try to view that directory in a browser it'll just say 'forbidden - you don't have permission to access those files'. It's perfectly happy to allow me to link directly to any files in that directory, just doesn't allow me to display the contents.

Dunno if it's something I'm doing wrong, or the isp just doesn't allow it.

nips, PM me the web address and I'll take a look and see if I can help.

I'm not exactly sure of the problem but on my hosting I have an option thus:

Website Directory Auto-Indexing - This feature allows you to either show the content of your web directories as file listings or show them as a 403 forbidden error.

That's the type of thing you want turned offf
