Want a laptop for a bit of gaming, but wait!

OK first of all, no prices above ?800! That's my limit! (lol it was ?700 this afternoon, oh how things have changed)

Basically, I just got shot of my P3/750 w/448mb ram which was fine for my needs, seeing as the only thing I really used it for was loitering on this forum, email, etc. I gave up on desktops last year when I sold my P4 2.8 to a mate, once I'd managed to yank myself out of the graphics card rat race I'd been caught up in.

Now I want a new laptop, with either a Radeon Mobility 9600 Pro (a.k.a M10) or a 9700 Pro (M11) dedicated graphics card (64 or 128mb ram). In terms of PC games, really only want to play Counter Strike (the old one) and Evil Genius and stuff, but seeing as I'm putting aside that much for the machine, I wouldn't mind getting something half decent.

I've been reading up on the graphics side of things, and the radeons seem fine. The problem is, I'm getting a bit confused about the current generation of processors that are available. I'll be going the Intel route, so my choices are:

    Pentium 4/Celeron desktop chip (around 2.5GHz - 3GHz)
    Pentium 4-M
    Pentium-M
    Celeron-M
Centrino (only joking, I know what Centrino implies! Just don't want any replies saying 'Centrino is really good!')

Now, with the desktop chips, I know what to expect in terms of power. Thing is, what with the lower clock speeds of the Pentium-M and Celeron-M, how much slower are they in terms of gaming ability?
I see a lot of laptops around now that have both a Celeron-M 1.3/1.4GHz AND a Radeon 9700 Pro, and from reviews, they've been getting decent 3DMark03 scores, but then 3DMark03 is pretty much all about the graphics card isn't it?

Say I wanted to play Half Life 2 (not fussed about settings, just want it as smooth as possible), what processor could handle it?

Seeing as the whole point of the Pentium-M is the large (1-2mb) cache and stuff, thus requiring less MHz to do it's thing, I've always assumed that the instructions held in the cache would be more appropriate for 2D/business software, not really for 3D games which need more grunt. This also lead me to think that the Celeron-M wouldn't be much use as it's only got 128kb cache so I'm ssuming it's only use is for low-power, low-cost laptops

So, does anyone here own a laptop with a Celeron-M or Pentium-M with a decent graphics card (ideally a radeon 9600/9700)? If so, what sort of games have you tried on it? Could you list your laptop specs?

tbh I'm trying to lean away from the 'desktop replacement' realm as I need a laptop that is, above all, cool (but not necessarily quiet, although that would help too) as I'll be typing alot! Which also means I want one with a good keyboard, too.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I ran halflife 2 very smoothly on a dell laptop with a radeon 9000 graphics card, it looked better than on my desktop (geforce ti4800), so anything with a 9600 should do just fine. Altho I know this isnt very helpfull, Ive never seen a laptop below ?1200 with a radeon 9600 in it, hell youll be pushed finding one with any kind of decent non integrated graphics card for below ?700!

      lol thanks for that info

so far i'm leaning towards this baby:

      it's the acer aspire 1672LMi and it's got a p4/3ghz, 512mb ddr333, 64mb radeon 9700 gfx (dedicated, not shared memory), etc

btw is 64mb vram ok for half-life 2, etc?

can't see you getting much better spec for the money tbh. But prehaps dabs or ebuyer would be few quid cheaper ??

            I have a M-1.7 with a 9700 (128mb), HL2 & Doom 3 ran very nicely at about mid-level quality.

But that's ?1000 (plus I paid for more ram & a faster HD). They do have cheaper models on the site, but tbh Acer and so on might be slightly better vfm. They don't come in red though.

lol no they don't! mind you they've got the ferrari range...

while i like the specs and price of the acer i posted, thing is the battery only lasts 1 hour, and as the cpu is a desktop model it will get hot too. if i find an athlon xp-m around 2800+ to 3000+ with a radeon 9700 then i'll get that. still looking though!

My flatmate has that P4 3ghz Acer. She doesn't really play games, although the Sims 2 ran perfectly fine on a couple of occassions, I'd imagine it has a fair grunt power-wise. My impressions of it are that it's pretty big, not that attractive and the screen is rather dark and lacks vibrancy, you could do a lot worse for the money though.

You don't mention actually travelling with it, if that's the case then why not buy a shuttle mini system and a nice TFT/mouse/keyboard combo? Just restrain yourself on the urge to upgrade all the time and you'll have a sweet little gaming system

Those 'Pure P4' (not the M type) laptops are best described as mobile desktops, tbh. They're enormous, and weigh a ton. Don't get one of those because you might as well just get a Desktop machine.

Although that shows the performance of the Pentium-M on a special desktop board, it should give you some idea of its performance. As you can see it does quite well...

thanks, oh and btw i've bumped my budget up to ?800 (tut-tut)

and Corrupt, yeah I decided to ignore the desktop cpu route, even though the acer is decent at that price (?629 inc vat). Looks like I'll be going the P-M(Centrino) route now.

So, lads, anyone got a laptop that's around ?600-800? if so, how does it hold itself against recent pc games? tbh i'm not interested in doom 3 (got it on my xbox now and it's fine on that plus the 5.1 means it's more immersive), mainly half life 2, which i hear runs ok on some pretty old machines!

wush, you're right i didn't mention portability, but basically i want a laptop so i can roam around the house with it as i've been doing with my old one that i sold last week. it's not much fun waiting to use my dad's machine for the net, especially as i get back from uni at around 6-7 pm by which time he's settled down to a night of grand prix 3 (i kid you not)
