    Because you are initialising it in the config.sys

    you need something like

    DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD0001

      right so I add that line to the config.sys, and should I delete the one in the autoexec.bat?

        the precise error message i get is:

        ERROR: An Extended Memory Manager is already installed.
        XMS Driver not installed.

          It's because you're loading himem.sys then trying to load emm386 with no EMS, which does basically the same thing.

          The line I pasted above needs to go in the config.sys and keep the original in the autoexec.bat. If you use the EXACT line, you'll need to find and download oakcdrom.sys (which is a standard cdrom driver) and put it on the disk too.

            i think i already have have the oakcdrom file, and about the himem and emm386, what should the command be? should I leave out the NOEMS (the only reason I put it is because the sblive autoexec file that came with the dos drivers has that command line, I just copied.

              upon further testing, its the line with himem that causes the error message, and its the line with emm386 that causes the computer to hang. Is it something to do with the version of emm386?the microsoft website indicates which operating systems use which version.msdos 6.22 uses 4.49, so thats the version ive been using. if i cant get this to work then I might as well create a dual boot system, one is win 95, the other win xp.
