Setting up my X-Box on the network... and streaming files from my PC's H/D

Can anyone point me through the steps needed to get this set up?

I remember looking into this before I got my chipped X-Box, and I seemed to bogged down in the amount of info, and there were loads of applications that I apparently needed/could use. It all seemed rather confusing.

I'm using XBMP to view .avi files at the moment, but via CD/DVD as I burn them.

    Cheers.

First you need xbox media centre to view the files and delete xbox media player as it is old and crap.

I am not sure about streaming yet as I need to learn how to do this as well.

As Legendary says, you want to use any relatively new build of Xbox Media Center.
You should find that XBMC will automatically be able to browse your network and see any Windows shared folders, which makes things very easy.

        Ah nice one... cheers.

I'll do a search for the new version of the media centre. The reason I used XBMP was because it plays all the AVI files I throw at it, whereas the media centre is very jerky and erratic. I'm presuming that's because I have an old version of the app.

How do I get the x-box set up on the network? Will it detect all the relevant settings once I plug in the network cable?

XBMC has 3 different network options - you can use DHCP, you can use your existing EvoX settings (if EvoX is your main dashboard), or you can manually specify an IP address/gateway address.

Of course, you'll need to get XBMC onto your XBox - the easiest way to do that is to FTP it across to the Xbox via a network connection and an FTP client on a PC. Do you already know how to do that?

I'll have a play around with getting it setup up on the network... (I have EvoX). I think I've found a compiled version of XBMC, and I should be OK with using an FTP client to get it set up as an application.. so I'll see how I get on.

              Thanks for the help.

If you're using a router or Internet Connection Sharing on the PC, you can just set EvoX to get an IP address automatically (use static ip - no).
Otherwise you'll need to manually give the Xbox an IP address that's on the same range as your PC (e.g. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 - it can be anything just so long as the first 3 sets of numbers are the same and the last numbers are different).

Once you've done that, you'll just need to connect to your Xbox using an FTP client - just put in the Xbox's IP address, and use a username/password of xbox/xbox.

Nice one. Yeah my router will automatically assign an IP address.

Gonna hook it all up now.

If you have problems with SMB shares (which I did) just try ccxstream from the PC. Really easy I found.

Looks like I'm all go... the X-Box is connected to the network, and I'm not transfering the XMBC files through my FTP client.

The latest versions of XBMC allow you to browse your network without having to edit the config file. There should be a SMB shares item listed, which will search your network for drive/folder shares.

The shares would need to be available for "everyone".

                          Good stuff.

I'm having trouble FTP'ing XMBC to the X-Box now. It's transferring extremely slow, and the X-Box itself has just crashed on me during a transfer. I'm presuming it should be transfering at a decent enough network speed.. i.e 10/100?

                          Anyone experienced this before?

                            Getting 'timed out' messages too.

What FTP client are you using? Make sure "passive mode" is disabled in the options.

EvoX isn't the most stable FTP server either, it might be a good idea to try FTPing to Avalaunch instead - if you don't have it installed, you can just copy it over as you would any other app.

Try switching the Xbox off and on again if your connection is still timing out.
