Help! My PSP is shafted. :(

I have already posted this up on Rllmuk but thought you experts might have an idea or two.

Have a Jap PSP. Was playing wipeout on it when it froze. Rebooted but froze on the game loading screen. From that point on if I boot with no UMD in it got to the menu screen and froze when I moved the icon and if I booted with a UMD in it sometimes got to the PSP loading screen or sometimes got to the game loading screen before it froze. Each time it froze the unit switched off after about 10 seconds.

Now it has gotten worse. When I switch it on the power light comes on but the screen doesnt, nor does the UMD drive fire up. Again the unit then turns itself off after 10 seconds. Have tried everything including removing battery, memory card, leaving it for a few hours, facing due north whilst standing on one leg. Nothing works. Occasionally if I hold all the buttons and switch it on it gives some coloured lines on the screen but thats it. Basically it is a geeky paperweight at the moment.

Returning to point of sale is not an option. I have mailed Sony customer services in the US and await their response but I dont suppose they will be too helpful.

Its a long shot but Just wondered if anyone here might have any ideas.

Befriend an American and ask them to take it back. Other than wait for Sony customer service.

Sony may be helpful as although its an import wich I guess their against, unlike say a PS2 its a portable machine so they are expected to be taken out of the country.

which firmware version were you running? v1.0 or did you upgrade it to v1.5 before your problems started?

If you get a (useful) response from Sony kindly share it with us. I'm sort of wondering how they will call this defect / what they are willing / able to do about it.

Is there anything on the memory card? I was looking at mine under the game option yesterday, and there was an applcation it recognised at 16kb, but it was corrupted. I have no idea what that was but i deleted it. Maybe you've got some corrupted memory card stuff. I know you said you tried taking it out, but did you inspect the contents?

Also, have you tried plugging it in with the power cable in? And the power cable in but the battery out?

I had upgraded the firmware to version 1.5 and had been running fine for approx 5 days after when this happened. I have only had the thing a week.

I thought about the memory card thing. It doesnt work without a memory card in and I even tried another card alltogether. No joy. The odd thing was that if I held Start-Select-Home-4 Shapes down when I booted it would get to the menu screens but as soon as I released all the buttons it just froze. I even managed to get to the saved games bit where the wipeout logo appeared and everything. Then it froze. Now of course I cant do anything.

I dont know if it is to do with Wipeout or if it is coincidence. Before that I had been playing Need for Speed Rivals on it for about a week with no problems. I started playing wipeout the day before it crashed.

All your suggestions are good although I have already tried most of them.

Makes no difference if It is plugged into the mains and I have tried with the battery both in and out. Havn't been able to inspect the contents of the card.

I am hoping too that Sony will be helpful and possibly offer to look at it for me. I told them I had bought it in Japan. They could offer some sort of service if I send it to them. Dont know really. Will keep you informed.

                      How helpful.

Try removing everything that is removable , battery, UMD memory stick etc. and leave it switched off for a good 24 hours. Then put the battery in and plug it into the mains, then switch it on again. Give that a go

                          This must be soo annoying!

You have NO idea how annoying.

I officially have the most expensive gadget ornament ever.

I will try leaving the battery and rest out for 24 hours yes but I dont hold much hope. I honestly reckon it is totally buggered. I had been playing Wipeot for a couple of days before it happened. I dont know how helpful Sony will be as it is not in its country of origin but they are having to deal with a lot of returns at the mo so you never know.

It does make me worry about the nature of a handheld device that this can happen to though. I have had a similar problem with pocket pcs but they have always had a hard reset feature which has fixed it before. If there is a feature such as this on the PSP I have no idea how to do it. Maybe Sony will tell me.

I cant believe I am the only person out of both NTSC-UK and RLLMUK who has had this problem. It makes me so sad. Especially as I have Ridge Racers, Lumnies and Dynasty Warriors being delieverd this week.

Have you tried booting into other games?
I do honestly feel for you... maybe there is a hard reset we just don't know about yet.
