xbox live and good ol' chips

I picked up and installed an xecuter 2.3b lite chip a some time ago. It never really worked and I decided to abandon it rather than paying soime repair costs. Sveral months down the line, now I?m looking to get xbox live.. I have heard some rumpours that people are getting their accounts banned by good old M$ so I just thought I?d check if its still ok to use the chip with xbox live.

I know the chip needs to be switched off and this apparently stops this happening but due to my dodgy installation I don?t know if this will work?

Well yes you can use Live providing the chip is off, but you'll have to provide more detail with regards to your problem.

If you switch the chip off, though, and play a retail/original game -- you should have no problem because you are not in any way (as far as MS knows) doing anything illegal so you should just be able to play the game ignorant to the chip.

well I don't know what the problem is exactly. Power is definately reaching the chip because I can see the blue light inside but when I try to play imports.... no result just gives me invalid region notices. The cable to the d0 seems to be okay too so I don't really know! Although when you switch the chip off should the blue light go out?

But anyway I shoudn't have any problems using Live?

Did flash the mod with an Xecuter2 bios? It cannot play imports/backups etc as stock.

if it was fitted correctly but not flashed you'd get a FRAG (Flashing Red and Green) front light, so it must be cheesed somewhere, if its not working at all you can go on xbox live no problem since there's no chance the chip is doing anything.

or you could take it to a proper installer and get it mended.

that probably be a good idea for the future. Can you recommend any good ones?

In the meantime I'll go ahead and get Live working. Least it isn't FRAG'd

unless it's got the cromwell bios on it (i dunno about 2.3b's haven't installed one for ages), in which case you'd see that, not a FRAG.

btw the chip's light should go red if it's off. it could be that the switches part is damaged, or more likely the wire connecting the switches to the chip is damaged.

you have three switches - on/off, flashing enable/disable, and bank 1/2

try changing the bank too, worth a shot...

hmmmm had a fiddle, no dice!

probably best to send it to a profesional.

thanks for the help, although I have another question, are any of you familiar with BT's online packages? due to where I live the fastest speed I can get is 512kb on BT Broadband Basic.

But yesterday I was reading some small print (on that little leaflet that came with chaos theory) and I noticed it said:

"BT Broadband Basic is not suitable for online gaming."

???? I'm hoping I've somehow misinterpreted this, especially as BT have been going on about the wonders of broadband for ages.

i'm not sure exactly, but it could be to do with the fact that broadband basic only gives you a paltry 1gb/month to download. when you're playing online you're downloading and uploading (although much less than if you were downloading files, say) throughout the game. i doubt you'd use up 1gb a month playing games online but i can't see any other limitations in place with that package that would hinder your online gaming experience.

besides, according to their site, bt broadband basic is actually 1mb, so i'm sure even with your limitation that you could get the next available package 'bt broadband' - same speed, etc, just more allowance (15gb)

but are you actually on bt basic at the moment, or are you shopping around?

seeing as your line won't DO more than 512kb (same as my uncle's - they would have upgraded his 512kb to 2mb for free but his line can't support it anyway), why not try another company if possible?

I've put the order in already, it's due to start up on monday. Hmm, I wonder if they mean that. It just shocked me, the way they it was written. Thanks for the help, I'll just have to report back when it's all running.

                      that's if it works

and I don't run out of space

                      or get banned from live!

There not much more can do now but wait!

well looking at the (relatively light) information available to me on the bt page, that's the conclusion that i drew anyway...

as for getting banned from live, just be smart and you'll be fine. i've been on live for 2 years and been fine. btw the second reason people get banned from live (the first being them leaving their chip on!) is that they registered for live and then AFTER their first registration, they upgraded their hard drive. when you register, your machine AND hdd serial are recorded. thus, if only the hdd serial is changed (by putting a newhdd in) then you'll get banned...

be awar as well, if the xbox is 2nd hand, as the person who initially bought it may have gone on live already (even for a 2 month trial)

ah, oh dear, my xbox is second hand and an early one to boot. Is there any way of telling if xbox live has been used at all? I got this xbox in summer 2003ish

does this cause a problem if the previous user has done this?

oh and by the way I started up another thread in the online gaming section, so more people might see the problem with the connection itself.
