I seem to remember a mate of mine was using some software that allowed Instant messaging across lots of services (such as MSN), anyone know what it might have been?

Adium -- Best IM program ever. It supports more protocols than you care about (it's based on the same libs as gAIM, the leading Linux IM client), has a very Mac-ish interface that doesn't get in the way (contrast the official clients, especially MSN for Windows, worst PoS ever) and smoothly integrates with the Address Book.
The latter means that if you list an IM username in a contact's profile, Adium will detect this and display his/her real name instead of whatever weird screen name he/she's using at the moment (MSN seems, for some reason, to encourage people to use stupidly long and totally unrelated screen names (a friend of mine is currently online as "I don't know why, but suddenly I'm falling"), and to change them as often as possible -- no more of that ****).
