    Wireless Transfer

    I have a wireless network at home and i want to send files from one computer to another. Can anyone help?

    My equipment is Netgear DG834GT and Netgear WG111T, both computers have XP pro with SP2 and i have File Sharing protocol running.

    Cheers

    Right click on the folder or drive you want to share, then 'Properties', then the 'Sharing' tab, then click 'Share this folder' Or something similar.

    Then on the other computer.

    Go to 'My Network Places'

    And it should be there.

      Hopefully by now both PCs will have IP addresses.

      To find out: Start --> Run --> cmd
      then: ipconfig to find out your IP addresses.

      Make sure you have enabled the option in the router for wireless PCs to be able to connect to each other... I think it explains how to do this here:
      Reviews of broadband modems and routers to help you choose the best hardware for you.

      After that, make sure you have a suitable share setup or should also be able to connect to C$

      So go Start --> Run --> 192.x.x.x\C$
      then enter a valid computer account and password from your target PC eg:
      192.x.x.x\user
      password

      Off you go!

          djjimbob - Could you please explain the above as that just went over my head (e.g. C$?).

            You shouldn't need to do all that fancy stuff, I have a wireless network and it works fine with me, you might need to refresh the page for them to appear but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Never had a problem with it before...

              Have you done "Setup a home or small office Network" in network connections? Does everything for you.

                demon9k - yes mate i had to run the wireless connection wizard, and after running it its asking me to make changes to router and other computer manually.

                I am just nervous changing the setting on the router as i have already had a lot of trouble setting it up. Also i dont know how to change the settings on the other computer.

                Never knew just to share files would be this much hassle and all using the same OS.

                      Sounds as if ur computers arent communicating with each other at all? can u access the internet on both? if so than ur router is working. try to ping each computer (check link below to see how to ping) that will tell u which computer is the problem.
                      TBH i didnt use all that file sharing protocol. i just did as the above ppl did (enabled each folder to be shared), but u cant do that until ur computers are comminucating.

                        AJ,

                        The C$ is basically a share of the root of your hard drive. Windows automatically creates this share, it is called an admin share.

                        If you have partitions on your disk, you may also have a D$, E$ etc etc etc.

                        So you need to make sure you can see the other PC, using the PING method as described in this thread. Then you use standard windows commands to connect to the C$.

                        Eg: Start --> Run

                        PCNAME\C$

                        then it might ask you for username and password and you will want to supply an administrator priviledge account.

                        EG:

                        PCNAME\ADMIN
                        password

                          jimbob - i'll try ur method once i can see my bros computer.

                              well taht confirms that both computers are communicating with the router, but not with eachother. sounds like a firewall problem. make sure that windows firewall is off on BOTH computers. then go to the netgear gateway (type this into address bar of IE 192.168.0.1. then find the firewall settings and type in the ip adress of both computers. (i cant really ermember how to do it exactly but this link explains it under 'firewall and port forwarding'). this way ur telling the router to allow traffic to each computer. cant really think of anything else. let me know how it goes.
