DVI cable over VGA

Is there a noticable difference using a DVI connection instead of a VGA connection?

I have just bought a mac mini and although my old PC had a DVI port as did my panel I never bothered getting a cable.

When I switch between the two on my monitor there is a huge difference. But on my friends TFT there is no difference at all. So I guess its monitor dependant.

There's DVI-D and DVI-A for digital and analogue streams on the same cable. If the monitor only uses the analogue bit, then you're not going to see a difference anyway.
