If you have already updated your PSP to version 1.50 then don't do it again.
Apparently, doing so would render your PSP totally dead and leave you needing to get it repaired at a considerable cost.
Admittedly, I don't know if this is 100% accurate (although I have seen several forums say the same thing - maybe others here can confirm this?). On a personal level, I'm not going to attempt to update my PSP with the same firmware a second time around.
Therefore, I wouldn't advise you to do it.

The firmware on the actual console itself is updated. Once the PSP is updated, it doesn't need anything on the memoery card, so you can delete your card or change no worries.
I don't want to tempt fate or suggest anyone actually do this, but updating with the same firmware shouldn't be a problem- all it's doing is copying the firmware across. You would only run into a problem if the copy stopped half way thru, leaving your PSP without a proper firmware from which to boot.
