I've had no trouble with my Western Digital, Seagate or Maxtor drives. Personally i'd have look at ebuyer and read some of the reviews. They might give you some idea about speed/noise issues.

I wouldn't trust Western Digital. I'd play safe and get Seagate. Quite a bit more expensive than a WD, but i've seen so many WD drives die.

And Maxtor haven't been so great recently. Seagate still seems to be the best bet for HD's.

Again I think this can be subjective depending on personal experience. I've had a IBM (lasted for years) no probs, one maxtor last for 5 years +, one maxtor go faulty after a week and a Western Digital drive fail on me (although this was replaced). My current drive is a Seagate 160GB Sata NCQ drive and I would add it is very quiet and seems to be reasonably paced.

Certainly WD, Maxtor, and Seagate are all easy to buy and cheap. Check Tom's Hardware for more info. If you want pure speed though the WD Raptor is the current king, but loud.

            Edit: noticed my Raptor error....doh.

Its pretty much a lottery imo. People we deal with at component retailers swear by hitachi and wd at the moment, but I wouldn`t trust anything other than seagate, closely followed by maxtor. I`ve currently got 9 Maxtors, all with no problems.
