    NTSC Cube Problems

Got a Japanese cube a week ago and it works fine on my TV in colour, but using the composite lead that comes with it is rather crap quality so I thought I may as well invest in a s-video lead as general opinion on the forum seems to think it's a hell of a lot better.

The s video signal is sent through a scart adapter as I have no s video port. The thing is, the cable only produces a black and white image now. Anyone know why it's not working in colour?

You need to make sure that your TV knows you're trying to use an S-video signal.
Usually you'll find that SCART socket 1 on a TV will be wired for composite and RGB, and SCART 2 for composite and S-video.

Sounds as though your TV thinks you're using a composite video source, which is why you'll be getting a black and white image. On my set, I cycle through the AV inputs and get an option for either AV2 or AV2/S (i.e s-video).

your Tv might not even support s-video through scart, my samsung TV doesn't

That's what I'm thinking, although S-Video Pal works through it.Suppose I'll just make do with composite.

Whilst Jap Cubes don't include RGB support out of the box you can get RGB output using a modified scart cable (made from a combination of a Jap D-terminal cable & a normal scart lead). The picture quality is excellent & imo far better than that from the official Nintendo s-video cable.

The only problem is that they are as rare as flying cows (although they do occassionally come up for sale on the trading boards) and will set you back ?30 upwards.....

Worth considering though if the crud composite picture starts to do your head in!

s-video pal works & ntsc composite works? if that's true i'd have thought s-video ntsc would work with no problems...

the problem could be with your adaptor - i've come across some that have an s-video socket but don't actually output s-video; they convert to composite instead. for the sake of a few quid it might be worth heading to an electronics shop to pick another one up...
