DPLII goes through the Red and white phono cables. AFAIK there is no optical cable for the GC.

You don't need a digital out cable for PL2. Any vanilla stereo signal fed into your amp will decode.

Or as Ciaran puts it. :-)

I thought that there was an input in the back of the GC for an optical out? there's another input, not sure what it's for then??

The "digital" output from the GC is for component video output for highest quality progressive scan signals. Nothing to do with sound. As the man says, the whole point of DPLII is that it doesn't need an optical output (just uses surround signal encoded into the left and right stereo jacks) so that the sound doesnt suffer from the lag of converting from analogue to digital and back again.
