Extending the range of a wireless network

we've just got wireless router in my house but the signal in the bottom floor is not brilliant (it's two floors from the router) so i want to somehow extend the signal by putting some sort of booster on the floor inbetween

firstly is this feasable ? is there a deviece that isn't neccessarily a router that just improves the signal strength and sends it on?

secondly how much do they cost?

but, bear in mind, i haven't used that one... or any at all in fact!

i know apple do one, but that looks a little complicated does it need plugging in through the ethernet port?
