    6800 Ultra ?590 !

Know it's latest technology and going be in short supply but ?590 is more than I paid for my first car.

(there is a pic in the SR mag if anyone else is a member)

Just think only ?1180 for a SLI set up.

Guess it can be bought cheaper elsewhere, not really looked tbh, oh it's only ?515 here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...CI_Series.html

Blimey... when I was into the whole PC gaming thing I used to grit my teeth when parting with ?300 for a top video card. That's just insane though.

Especially when the 7800's are less than a month away...

Thats madness. Still there'll be people out there who buy it as a form of penis substitute I'm sure.

a PC graphics card more expensive that next gen consoles...?
hasn't that always been the case from PS1 onwards ?
glad I never used mine for gaming, except the odd emu, this is taking the piss BIGTIME,
even with the elitist attitude of PC owners (that i know anyway).

Yes, you pay a price premium for having an absolute top-end card like that, just as you do for processors etc. They're for enthusiasts with lots of money, not normal people - a perfectly decent card capable of playing recent games can be had for about a quarter of the price.

who's getting the 7800 gtx, gt etc? and what are people's estimates for prices?

besides there are only a couple of pc games at the moment that will utilise that amount of onboard ram, and most games will chug along at the same pace on the regular 6800 ultra 256 mb! also just to take the piss a little more, the 7800 series are 256 gddr3

obviously not worth the money and i think the new cards will be cheaper than the 512 6800 ultra, my gues is the 7800 gtx will be ?450 give or take.

Hopefully the 6800utras will drop in price by the end of the month (mainly looking for the 256mb card, the prices for the 512mb cards are ridiculous)

You never know, the 7800s might be reasonably prices (yeah right)

Prices for graphics cards are ridiculous for that price you could buy a xbox/ps2/gamecube and some games for each format and probably some money left over

Hang on a second. The alleged reason for why this is 'worth' so much is that it's got 512Mb of GDDR3 onboard, and that stuff costs a fortune.

However, later this year the XBox 360 will supposedly launch (yes, that's an entire machine, not just a card) with the same amount of the same stuff for $299 (i.e. about ?170 before VAT).

                        Did I miss something?

yeah, thats why you can pick up a brand new 6800gt with 256mb gddr3 ram for only ?175 +vat at ocuk, so you could buy three of those for the price of a single 6800ultra 512.

I don't think it's worth it, as so few games chew through even 256MBs of video memory... In fact, I can't think of a single one that could fill up that vast amount of GPU RAM but Doom 3.

And possibly all the games running off it's engine in the future.

Anyway, that's a ridiculous price. I'm living with a guy who built a PC perfectly capable of running any game you care to throw at it for ?400.
