    Free/Shareware PC game recommendations

A friend of mine has just bought a family PC. He's totally computer illiterate, so has asked me to nip over at the weekend to set it up and get him started on how to use Windows and stuff. No internet yet: has to wait a couple of weeks to get broadband activated.

He's got an 11-yr-old kid who has been nipping his ear to get it up and running cos she wants to play games on it, so he's asked me if I could maybe bring some games to install.

I'm not much of a PC gaming fan ... all I've really got to hand are a load of emulators. I'll be having a good rummage around on Google later tonight, but, in the meantime, if any of you lot could suggest some fun games from the interweb that I could stick on a CD and install, I'd be very grateful.

    Cheers.

Cave Story is very good: http://agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.html
rRootage and Noiz2sa are two good freeware shooters, you can get them at Home Of The Underdogs along with a load more freeware and stuff of more 'dubious' origin. Most of what's in their Hall Of Belated Fame' is good, but obviously go for the newer stuff as a lot of it's DOS based and a bit of a pain to get working a lot of the time.

I'd stick with the emulators really, for an 11 year old Genesis and SNES games will be the best thing ever. I recently gave my SNES with a stack of games to a 6 year old kid, greatly annoyed his mother since he won't stop playing it .

He might like Bontago. It's like playing jenga with added RTS and tetris elements. It's really easy to play and has a nice sandbox mode where you can play around with the physics engine.

If they're online then there's always Tactics Arena Online. It's a 1-on-1 turn-based strategy game. Plays a bit like FFTA.

All about Soldat. Worst graphics probably in the whole world. But as for it's online gameplay, I love it. Jetpacks and big guns for the win to be honest! Google search it, it should be the first there.

ShadowFlare is a nice Diablo-clone, with good graphics and some nice ideas (like te option to keep a dog with our character).

The first episode is free. Gete it here: http://www.shadowflare.us/download.htm

Then, I don't know if they will be appropriate for a 11 kid, but the first two GTA are freeware, now, thanks to Rockstar Games. Get them at their website: http://www.rockstargames.com/classics

MiniRacer is a fun top-down racing game created using a modified version of the Quake engine.

PacMan Words is one of the better remake of Pac-Man I've ever seen. It has nice looking graphics and improved gameplay. Try it!

T2002 is a remake/tribute to the great Turrican.

            Get it here: http://www.pekaro.de

Glace is a very fun platform, with cute graphics and good gameplay.

3D Realms has "liberated" StarGunner, a nice shoot'em up.

look for it on 3D Realms website download page:

Forgot to mention Torus Trooper as well, sort of like Tempest crossed with F-Zero - made by the same guy as rRootage etc.
