On the side of my mac there is a symbol that looks like a square with a line either side of it running vertically.
Any ideas what it is?

External mini-VGA socket. There's one on iBooks and old Powerbooks.
Not sure if the eMac can span screens, just mirror - so it'd be handy for hooking it up to a projector, but not to another monitor (because your main monitor could only be reflected, as it were).
You can get an adapter for it for about ?15 at the Apple Store (online or real); the laptops tend to come with them in the box. -
