pc overclocks - what have you achieved?

    ok peeps lets hear it!?

my pc is a socket 939 amd64 3000+ running at 2.48 ghz with the corsair ddr400 ram running at 550mhz.................on stock cooling.

ahhhhh that pushes it above the 3800+ for a third of the price.

    happy days.

My P4 2.8Ghz is running at 3.1 or something, the most pointless overclock ever

Was going to go the full way but I got bored and never changed it back.

My P4 2.4Ghz runs at 2.7 and my 6600GT is overclocked as far as possible until all the visuals come out with that weird green tint thing. I never have done it with my RAM though. Thats a motherboard specific thing isn't it? Don't think mine can do it, since it's a **** cheap job.

I really want to buy a 3.0 Gig CPU or higher but it's so much money and I don't know if the difference would really be worth the money. I also have a Coolermaster Jet 7 which keeps the CPU ice cool with about 5 or 6 case fans too to be on the safe side.

6600GT up from 500/900 (CPU/memory) to 590/1150, can't remember figures for main CPU at moment.

Had my 3.2 P4 at 3.6 for a while, its all back at standard now though...

go for an oem amd64 socket 939, they run really cool at standard speeds, and like my 3000+ a 30% or more overclock with proper cooling you can match the top end cpu's.

how memory overclcoking works is that you have to run the mem and cpu speed in tandem, for example: cpu 275mhz with a x9 mutiplier = 2475 mhz(and the 3000+ is 1800mhz standard).................so 275 mhz cpu clock x2(ddr)=550. so mr ddr400 is actually running at 550mhz and my cpu speed is above.

counter strike source tests at max settings went from 88 fps at standard speeds, to 110 fps at oc'd speeds..............so you can see it makes a big difference.

oh and the cpu idles at around 40 degree mark with stock cooler.

i have simply oc'd my 6800gt to ultra speeds.

P4 mobile laptop CPU in a desktop motherboard, 1.8GHz to 3.3GHz (12 x 272 FSB). Cooled with a big Thermalright copper heatsink and slow 92mm fan.

But now clocked down to 3GHz for the summer as gets too hot in my room.

I have an AMD 3500 processor, measured at 2.21GHZ. What performance increase could I reasonably expect, and also, not having overclocked a CPU before, what I need to look out for and even how its achieved would be appreciated. Presumeably this all happens in the bios right - Im not wanting to buy new cooling components (I have a shuttle PC) but if a benefit is there I may as well take advantage of it.

I have the same shuttle as Marcus, but haven't overclocked anything because I'm quite concerned with the overheating. Inside there is so little room that it can't possibly be doing it any good. I've even started running it with the case slightly open!

I did put my graphics card on "Overdrive" mode earlier today, but that didn't really do anything. The GFX temp is currently at 47c, can't get the cpu temp without going to the bios which I can't be arsed to do right now

I know little about overclocking, but currently the CPU (athlon64 3500+) is running at 526.50 and memory (2x 512 drr dual channel) running at 560.25. I'm sure someone can tell me if that is good or not!

I have the option for oc'ing, but my PC pretty much runs everything at max detail without any problems. Apart from Battlefield 2

I wouldn't bother overclocking your CPU unless you actually find you need it to run a game properly. It's not worth risking system stability just to benchmark a few points higher.

your best bet is to check out websites like hard ocp, and firing squad.
just type them into google and look on their websites for reviews of the amd 64 processors.

they go into detail on overclocking for every type of amd that they review.

basically you should imo be able to clock your cpu to about 2.6ghz with no voltage adjustments and minimal bios fiddling, however you will need adequate memory so you can match the fsb.

                        check out those sites!

oh and dont worry about heat as the socket 939 amd 64 processors are very cool at stock speed, so a few hundred mhz difference wont cause much heat increase unless you need to change the voltage.

its not complicated, and oh so satisfying to clock your cpu past speed that are hundreds of pounds more to buy at stock! oh and 100% stable.

yeah i wouldnt go that far with the stock cooler but

if you have watercooling or loads of case fans then maybe you can push it

I have my Athlon XP2600+ running @ 200Mhzx11.5=2300Mhz, which equates roughly to a 3300 (I think) if such a thing existed, all on air cooling. My Radeon 9500 is softmodded to 9700 and then the clocks are upped to beyond pro levels as well. It runs Far Cry/HL2 and Doom3 very nicely @ 1024*768 (I only have a 17" CRT monitor, so don't need uberhigh resolutions)

The best thing though is that using a program called 8rdavcore I have a nice range of under and overclocks set up so that if I'm just on light usage it throttles everything back to use less power and the fans turn off altogether (temps stable ~ 55?C) and then when I do something more intensive it ramps up the voltages and clocks to the level above (temps actually come down to under 50?C when gaming) - there are a few intermediate steps too.

It took me a while to reach this state though, and it was mostly done by accident as I bought quality kit to try and silence my overly loud old setup. I got through 4 motherboards before finding one that's rock solid at various under/over clocks and is comfortable switching between them, I have matched dual channel memory, I had to try 3 or 4 HSFs, several thermal compounds and a good case (cooling is important, and my setup still isn't very loud, even when all fans are on full) I need to upgrade my graphics card, but I'm going to wait until prices drop under ?100 before doing that.

The great thing though is that by doing it all with Athlon XPs everything was dirt cheap because shops were selling their old stock off. I picked up my motherboard for ?19!

Next major upgrade I do I'll be targetting silent computing from the offset. Once you've had a PC which is truly quiet 90% of the time there's no going back.
