    Psp - 7.1?

So does the PSP really have 7.1 channels? If so, wtf does this mean when it's only got a headphone jack? Is it like DPLII Plus Super Mega?

    Pre-release hype

I think the critical bit of information in that article can be found at the very end where it says:

"By Staff, GameSpot POSTED: 07/29/03 11:23 AM"

After looking at the system specifications on Sony's US website, no mention of 7.1ch "3D" sound is anywhere to be found. It's just Sony's 2 year old hype engine still chugging along.

Maybe it's for using with these 450 quid headphones?

Sounds like someone from the PR department speaking without a clue.

Genius! I heard the new PS3 is going to have 4D ultra-realistic effects.

Anyway, that 7.1 thing was widely reported. Was it Sony giving out the info or just gamespot?

Wierd. Who would even want it as a feature? Unless they start selling a PSP dock that lets you hook up the PSP to your hifi, when is it going to be used? Even then it would be easier just to use the hifi.

I questioned it at the time, but no-one seemed to care (lost in the hype!)

I suspect what happened was that 7.1 capability is part of the UMD spec, and not the PSP. Since both items were unveiled together, wires got crossed.

I think that it has 5.1, but only when you hook it up through a pair of decent headphone's.Surround sound is pretty redundant in headphone's to me, it just does not feel the same as actually hearing the noise from the back or corner of a room.

The only way you could truly find out is to test it I suppose, how you would go about doing that is something for one of the sound expert's on the board.
