    Running TV/Freeview/Xbox through PC

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to anything technical re PCs. To save some space I'm looking to either buy a the neccessary equipment to run my TV/freeview signal and Xbox (eventually 360) through my current TFT monitor, or buy a 17" monitor/TV that can accept PC, Freeview and Xbox signals.

Any advice on where to start looking and the kind of price I should be paying (hopefully as low as possible!!) I saw a 20" LCD TV in Dixons for ?380 that accepts PC, XB etc but I'm hopin to pay around ?250 if i get a TV.

The cheapest option as well as probably the best quality is to buy a Freeview PCI card (they're about ?40 to ?50), and if you want to run the XBox too get one of those VGA adaptors for it (this means modding to NTSC if your machine is PAL).

If you want a ?250 TV with VGA input, then you're probably looking at 15", to be honest.

I'm looking for a similar kind of thing, having already tried a freeview pci card, and logic 3's super vga box (which seemed fine till it seems my tft monitor doesn't support ntsc). So it now looks like an lcd tv , but what kind of price range am i looking at for at least a 17" that'll support decent pc usage (but not necessarily a lot of pc gaming) ?

Your monitor will support NTSC, as it is 720x480/60 and nearly the same timings as VGA, although you may have to shift the image over a bit to fill the screen.

If you have a TV card download DScaler ad use that as your software to grab say an S-Video signal to display it on your monitor.
You tell it what signal is coming in, or leave it as auto, and then tell it what the native resolution is on your monitor, so 1024x768@60Hz and it will scale the incoming image to that resolution.

          I've been looking at this:

          http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...=1LBLMBZ95GMPC

          And these from eBuyer:

          http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=77970

If I have to chip my Xbox to get it running through my current PC, I'm thinking about buying one of these.

i'm not quite sure i followed that, but basically the vga box i'm using is supposed to auto detect stuff like that, and when i tried it out, i couldn't get anything on the vga channel , just the black/blue screen of nothingness. Then when i tried some ntsc stuff on my xbox , it'd only display it in black and white, which is why i assumed it was my monitor not supporting it.

Actually some of those there look pretty decent, only question i have is my seemingly eternal ( since i keep bringing it up for no apparent reason) is if they support that ntsc thing..dumb question i'm sure since this is an importers forum after all, but still, thought i'd ask

You need somthing to take the interlaced 576i format from your freeview and convert it to a progressive format that your monitor can understand.

have a look at ProV unit, this will do it for you.

If you just want the Xbox (and any other consoles) working with HDTV on your monitor, have a look at http://www.vdigi.com

I've just ordered one for myself after advice from some of the others on this forum, and it should be future proof for the 360.

Thanks a lot for the replies, taking a look at both options - the only thing that I'm unsure about re the VDigi box is that UK Xbox has to be modded to run in HD, will the VDigi product still work...?

The Vdigi box seems to take whatever component signal you put into it and transcode it to RGBhv, and probaly at a set resolution using the dip switches to match your monitor.
Once it is modded you set it to ntsc anyway to get the HD options.
